Rio Tinto company files nine lawsuits against Serbia over Jadar project suspension

The company ‘Rio Sava Explorations’, a daughter company of the ‘Rio Tinto’ company, filed nine lawsuits against Serbia before the Administrative Court due to the suspension of the Jadar project and lithium mining works.

The Administrative Court confirmed to Nova.rs media outlet that four cases were formed against the decision of the Government of Serbia from January 2022, which suspended the project, two against the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management and three against the Ministry of Finance.

The first two lawsuits, according to the court, were filed on May 13, 2022, and refer to the decisions of the Government of Serbia to cancel the decisions of the Ministry of Environmental Protection on the underground exploitation of boron and lithium and the environmental impact assessment.

Two other lawsuits against the Government were filed after its Administrative Commission rejected the appeals of the ‘Rio Save’ company, while two lawsuits against the Ministry of Agriculture were filed because of inspection measures.

The basis of the dispute in cases against the Ministry of Finance, as stated by the Administrative Court, is tax.
