Metso and Almalyk MMC forge partnership for sustainable copper smelter in Uzbekistan

Metso and JSC Almalyk Mining and Metallurgical Company (Almalyk MMC) have entered into a significant agreement for the supply of process technology for Almalyk MMC’s upcoming copper smelter venture in Uzbekistan.

Having collaborated on minerals processing and metallurgical operations since 2011, the companies are now extending their partnership with this frame agreement.

Under this agreement, equipment package contracts will be finalized and booked as they are signed, with the majority expected to be completed this year. This agreement follows on from Metso’s previous contract with Almalyk MMC, signed in late 2022, which covered design and basic engineering for the copper smelter.

The new smelter, to be integrated with Almalyk MMC’s existing operations in Almalyk, is planned to have a production capacity of 300,000 tons per annum (tpa) of copper cathodes and 1.8 million tpa of sulphuric acid.

Expressing satisfaction with the partnership, Piia Karhu, President of Metso’s Metals business area, stated, “We are honored to have been chosen as the strategic partner for Almalyk MMC’s smelter project. Metso is committed to providing Almalyk MMC with cutting-edge, sustainable technology to advance their copper refining processes.”
