Variscan Mines Reveals High-Grade Zinc Discoveries at Spain’s Novales-Udías Project, Strengthening Europe’s Critical Minerals Supply Potential

Variscan Mines has unveiled a significant collection of high-grade historic zinc drilling results across the Novales Trend at its flagship Novales-Udías Zinc Project in northern Spain, reinforcing the company’s belief that the district holds substantial untapped exploration and development potential. The newly compiled data highlights extensive zinc mineralization beyond currently defined resources and further strengthens the project’s position as one of the most promising zinc development opportunities in Europe.

The results originate from historic surface drilling programs conducted across the Novales Trend, a key mineralized corridor within the larger Novales-Udías Project area. Located in the renowned Basque-Cantabrian Basin, the project sits within one of Europe’s most productive zinc regions and is near the historic Reocín Mine, widely recognized as one of the world’s most significant zinc-producing operations.

Historic Drilling Data Reveals Extensive High-Grade Zinc Mineralization

The newly analyzed drilling database contains numerous high-grade zinc intercepts distributed throughout the Novales Trend, providing additional evidence of the scale and continuity of mineralization across the district.

According to Variscan Mines, the results extend well beyond the boundaries of the current Mineral Resource Estimate, suggesting considerable exploration upside and potential for future resource growth. The findings also provide valuable geological information that will support upcoming drilling campaigns and improve targeting efficiency as the company advances development plans.

The expanded dataset is expected to play a critical role in refining geological models and identifying priority areas for resource expansion around the historic San José Mine and along strike within the broader project area.

Major Drilling Program Set to Accelerate Resource Growth

The company has already secured approval for an extensive surface drilling campaign consisting of 69 diamond drill holes totaling approximately 13,800 meters across its mining license areas. This drilling program is designed to test extensions of known mineralization, expand existing resources, and evaluate new exploration targets identified through the historic data review.

Management believes the recently compiled drilling results demonstrate strong continuity of zinc mineralization throughout the Novales Trend, increasing confidence in the district’s potential to host significantly larger resources than currently defined. As exploration advances, the project could move closer to supporting future mine development and production scenarios within one of Europe’s most strategically important base metals districts.

Strategic Location Enhances Development Potential

One of the project’s major advantages is its proximity to established industrial infrastructure.

The Novales-Udías Zinc Project is located approximately 80 kilometers from Glencore’s San Juan de Nieva zinc smelter, one of Europe’s key zinc processing facilities. This strategic location offers potential logistical and economic benefits, including reduced transportation costs and access to existing processing capacity.

Infrastructure, historical mining activity, and established permitting frameworks further strengthen the project’s development prospects. The district benefits from a long mining history, existing mining licenses, and strong support from regional authorities, factors that could help accelerate future development timelines compared with many greenfield projects.

Explorer-to-Producer Strategy Gains Momentum

Variscan Mines continues to advance its long-term “Explorer-Producer” strategy, which aims to transition the company from exploration into future zinc production. A major component of this strategy involves the ongoing San José Mine Restart Study, which is evaluating the technical, economic, and regulatory requirements needed to potentially bring historical mining operations back into production.

At the same time, the company continues to expand its geological understanding of the district. Variscan has significantly increased its exploration database through the acquisition and digitization of more than 146 historic drill holes totaling over 52,000 meters of drilling. This growing dataset is providing new insights into the distribution of mineralization across the district and helping identify opportunities for additional discoveries.

Europe’s Growing Need for Domestic Critical Minerals

The importance of the Novales-Udías Project extends beyond Spain’s mining sector. As the European Union intensifies efforts to strengthen domestic supplies of critical and strategic raw materials, zinc has become increasingly important due to its role in construction, infrastructure, renewable energy systems, transportation, and industrial manufacturing.

Europe’s dependence on imported metals has become a growing concern amid supply chain disruptions, geopolitical uncertainty, and rising demand driven by the energy transition. Projects capable of delivering domestic metal production are attracting increased attention from governments, investors, and industrial consumers seeking greater supply security. The Novales-Udías Project is well positioned to benefit from these trends thanks to its location, infrastructure access, and expanding resource base.

A Potential New Source of European Zinc Supply

With high-grade historic drilling results continuing to demonstrate extensive mineralization across the Novales Trend, Variscan Mines is steadily building the foundation for what could become one of Europe’s most advanced zinc development projects.

The combination of significant exploration upside, existing mining licenses, proximity to major smelting infrastructure, historical production, and supportive regional policies creates a compelling development opportunity within a jurisdiction increasingly focused on securing domestic metal supplies. As resource growth drilling, mine restart studies, and district-scale exploration programs continue, the Novales-Udías Project is emerging as a potential future contributor to Europe’s critical minerals strategy and an important source of zinc for industrial markets.

The latest drilling compilation not only strengthens confidence in the project’s geological potential but also reinforces its role in supporting Europe’s efforts to build more resilient and diversified supply chains for essential industrial metals.
