Spain is reinforcing its position as one of Europe’s leading mining destinations, driven not by a single flagship development but by a diverse portfolio of copper, polymetallic and critical minerals projects progressing across multiple stages of development. From producing copper operations to advanced exploration assets and brownfield mine restarts, the country is building a pipeline that aligns with Europe’s ambition to secure domestic supplies of strategic raw materials.
Established mining districts, extensive infrastructure and access to the European Union market continue to attract investment into Spanish mining. At the same time, companies must navigate environmental permitting, financing challenges and community engagement as they seek to bring new projects into production.
Atalaya Mining expands beyond Riotinto with district-wide growth strategy
At the center of Spain’s copper sector remains Atalaya Mining, whose Proyecto Riotinto continues to serve as one of the country’s principal producing copper operations.
During the first quarter of 2026, the mine produced 9,939 tonnes of copper, with production affected by unusually heavy rainfall that temporarily restricted access to parts of the Cerro Colorado open pit. Despite these weather-related disruptions, the operation processed 4.1 million tonnes of ore and achieved a copper recovery rate of 81.54%, demonstrating the resilience of the processing operation. The company’s latest operational update highlights a broader strategy that extends well beyond current production levels at Riotinto.
Atalaya continues advancing several development opportunities across the Riotinto District, including the San Dionisio, San Antonio and Masa Valverde deposits, while also progressing plans for a future polymetallic processing circuit designed to diversify production and unlock additional value from the district’s mineral resources. Chief Executive Officer Alberto Lavandeira also pointed to renewed momentum at the Touro copper project in Galicia. A recent court ruling overturned the negative environmental decision issued in January 2020, allowing the company to continue working with regional authorities under the project’s existing strategic development framework.
As a result, Atalaya is increasingly evolving into a diversified Spanish copper platform rather than relying solely on a single producing mine. Riotinto continues generating operating cash flow, while higher-grade satellite deposits such as San Dionisio and Masa Valverde could enhance future mine economics. Touro offers additional long-term growth potential, although permitting requirements and community acceptance remain critical factors in its development.
Emerita Resources advances one of Spain’s largest polymetallic projects
Spain’s growing pipeline also includes significant opportunities in polymetallic mining through Emerita Resources’ Iberian Belt West (IBW) Project, located in the mineral-rich province of Huelva. The project encompasses the La Infanta, Romanera and El Cura deposits and contains a combined 25.76 million tonnes of mineral resources, according to the company. Situated within the internationally recognized Iberian Pyrite Belt, one of Europe’s premier volcanogenic massive sulphide districts, the project offers exposure to a broad mix of industrial and critical metals while benefiting from one of the continent’s longest-established mining regions.
Emerita’s next major milestone is now expected during the third quarter of 2026, after the company postponed publication of its Prefeasibility Study (PFS) to allow for additional metallurgical testing and process optimization. The company reports that most engineering work has already been completed, including underground mine design, surface infrastructure planning, flotation plant engineering and development of a Railveyor underground-to-surface material transport system, which is intended to improve operational efficiency. Completion of the prefeasibility study is expected to provide investors with a clearer assessment of the project’s technical and economic potential while laying the foundation for future development decisions.
Penouta restart highlights Spain’s critical minerals opportunity
Spain’s mining resurgence extends beyond copper and polymetallic deposits into critical minerals that are increasingly important for advanced manufacturing and modern technologies. Energy Transition Minerals (ETM) is advancing the acquisition of the Penouta tin-tantalum-niobium project in Galicia, a brownfield operation the company describes as Europe’s only developed tin-tantalum-niobium mine.
Although mining operations ceased in October 2024, Penouta retains substantial existing infrastructure, including an open-pit mine, crushing and grinding facilities, gravity processing circuits, engineered tailings storage facilities and supporting site infrastructure. The presence of established processing facilities significantly reduces redevelopment requirements compared with greenfield mining projects and could accelerate a future production restart.
Offtake interest underscores commercial potential
Commercial interest in Penouta has already begun to emerge. According to Mining Weekly, commodities trader Traxys has signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding with Energy Transition Minerals covering the potential purchase of up to 100% of future tin, tantalum and niobium concentrates produced at the project. The two companies intend to negotiate binding documentation for a six-year offtake agreement beginning with the restart of commercial production. Such agreements are increasingly viewed as important financing tools, providing future producers with revenue visibility while helping downstream manufacturers secure long-term supplies of strategically important raw materials.
Spain offers one of Europe’s broadest mining portfolios
Spain’s mining sector combines several competitive advantages that continue to attract investment across multiple commodities. The country benefits from established mining districts, extensive brownfield infrastructure, experienced mining expertise and direct access to European industrial markets. Its project pipeline spans copper, zinc, tin, tantalum, niobium and other critical raw materials needed for energy transition technologies and advanced manufacturing.
Yet despite these advantages, project success will ultimately depend on effective execution rather than geological potential alone. Environmental permitting, water management, local political support, financing availability and community engagement remain decisive factors that will determine which projects progress from development into commercial mining operations.
