Spain Accelerates Strategic Mineral Exploration in Andalusia to Strengthen Europe’s Supply Chains

Spain is taking a major step to boost its domestic mineral resources with a new exploration initiative in Andalusia, aiming to identify deposits of strategic metals essential for the continent’s energy transition and advanced industrial technologies. This effort aligns with a broader European push to reduce reliance on imported critical raw materials, which are vital for electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, and digital infrastructure.

The initiative targets southern Spain, particularly the Iberian Pyrite Belt, a polymetallic formation extending into Portugal and renowned as one of the richest mineral provinces in the world. Andalusia’s geological landscape holds copper, zinc, lead, silver, gold, lithium, and rare earth elements, minerals crucial for wind turbines, battery storage systems, EVs, and power grid infrastructure.

Mining in the belt dates back more than 3,000 years, from ancient Iberian and Roman activity to modern industrial operations. Today, advanced exploration technologies—including geophysical mapping, 3D geological modeling, and deep drilling techniques—are enabling scientists to locate untapped deposits at greater depths.

Modern Exploration Programs

The Andalusian exploration initiative is a preliminary step to assess geological potential before any mining development. Authorities plan to conduct surveys and drilling campaigns to evaluate resource quality and identify areas suitable for future investment. If promising deposits are found, companies could proceed with feasibility studies, environmental impact assessments, and eventual mining development.

Current projects already demonstrate the region’s potential. The Masa Valverde copper project in Huelva, led by Atalaya Mining, exemplifies how exploration can evolve into industrial investment. With a planned budget of approximately €174 million, the project is expected to generate over 150 direct jobs and hundreds of indirect positions in supporting industries such as drilling, logistics, and equipment supply.

Other companies are also active in the belt. Denarius Metals, a Canadian firm, is exploring 665 hectares near its Lomero polymetallic project, evaluating copper-rich mineralization. Emerita Resources has conducted airborne geophysical surveys and drilling campaigns to identify additional copper and polymetallic deposits. These efforts underscore growing international interest in Andalusia as a key European source of critical metals.

Strategic Importance for Europe

The initiative is part of a broader European strategy to secure critical raw materials amid the electrification of energy systems and the growth of EVs. Metals such as copper, lithium, and nickel are increasingly essential for battery manufacturing, renewable energy, and industrial modernization.

  • Copper: Vital for electrical wiring, grids, EVs, solar panels, and wind turbines. Europe’s domestic production remains limited, increasing the importance of new deposits.

  • Lithium and nickel: Crucial for battery cathodes and energy storage, with Europe seeking domestic sources to reduce dependence on imports from South America, Australia, and Asia.

Spain’s Raw Materials Action Plan 2025–2029 highlights policies to expand exploration, improve geological mapping, encourage responsible mining development, and promote domestic recycling and processing of strategic minerals.

Economic and Environmental Impacts

Exploration programs generate economic benefits beyond mining itself, including demand for geologists, drilling specialists, environmental consultants, and laboratory technicians. Successful discoveries can lead to long-term investments in processing facilities, transport networks, and environmental management systems, creating sustained employment in historically mining-dependent areas.

Environmental protection is central to the initiative. Exploration permits allow only geological studies, not mining, ensuring compliance with strict EU regulations on water management, waste disposal, land restoration, and ecosystem monitoring. Historical mine rehabilitation is also a priority, enabling modern extraction while addressing past environmental impacts.

Andalusia’s Role in Europe’s Energy Transition

The Andalusian exploration push reflects a shift in European resource policy. Decades of declining mining activity made Europe dependent on imports, but the growth of clean-energy technologies has prompted a reassessment. Andalusia, with its centuries-long mining heritage and rich mineral potential, is poised to play a pivotal role in Europe’s domestic supply strategy.

By unlocking new deposits through exploration, the region can support industrial modernization, renewable energy development, and battery production, strengthening both Spain’s economy and Europe’s long-term strategic raw materials security.
