Savannah Advances Barroso Lithium Project Toward Construction and European Battery Supply

Savannah Resources has launched final geotechnical and groundwater drilling at its Barroso lithium project in Portugal, marking another step toward detailed engineering, construction planning and project financing for the proposed mine. Two drilling rigs are currently working across the site, with further equipment expected to join the programme. The campaign is designed to generate engineering data needed for the development of key infrastructure, including tailings facilities, water reservoirs, waste storage areas, roads and other mine installations.

Barroso Moves Toward Project Execution

The latest drilling programme signals a transition for Barroso from permitting and resource development toward a more advanced pre-construction and engineering phase.

Savannah Resources said technical, environmental and social due diligence required for the project’s financing process is already well advanced. The company has also selected a contractor to carry out front-end engineering design (FEED) for the proposed lithium processing plant. The combination of site investigations and processing-plant engineering is intended to establish the technical configuration required before construction and financing can progress further.

20 Million-Tonne Lithium Reserve

The Barroso project has a JORC-compliant reserve of about 20 million tonnes and has been designated a Strategic Project under the EU Critical Raw Materials Act. The designation reflects the European Union’s effort to expand domestic supplies of critical raw materials, including lithium, as the bloc seeks to strengthen its battery manufacturing supply chain.

Portugal has also allocated potential state support of up to €110 million for the project. The public support is separate from Savannah’s broader project-financing process and remains subject to the applicable conditions attached to the government commitment. The company’s ongoing financing due diligence should not be interpreted as committed debt funding. It represents part of the process required to establish the financing structure for development and construction.

Lithium Supply for Europe

If developed, Barroso could become one of the EU’s first major new hard-rock lithium mines, producing spodumene concentrate for European battery supply chains.

The project has gained importance as European battery and automotive industries seek to reduce their dependence on imported lithium raw materials and processing networks concentrated outside Europe. Domestic production would provide an additional source of lithium feedstock closer to European processing and manufacturing facilities, supporting the EU’s broader effort to develop a more integrated critical-minerals supply chain.

Engineering and Financing Remain Key

The latest geotechnical and groundwater work is focused on gathering information required to finalise the design of the mine’s supporting infrastructure, while the FEED programme advances the processing plant configuration. The next stages will depend on engineering completion, project financing, construction preparation and relationships with local stakeholders. The timing of these activities will determine how quickly Barroso can progress from advanced development studies toward physical construction.

The drilling campaign and FEED programme nevertheless represent a further move for the Portuguese lithium project toward a defined construction configuration and the technical groundwork required for project financing.
