Salau Tungsten Project Expands as Apollo Minerals Uncovers New High-Grade Zones in France

Apollo Minerals has strengthened the exploration case for the historic Salau tungsten project in southern France, identifying additional high-grade mineralisation through a detailed review of historical drilling results and underground mine data. The latest geological interpretation has identified a previously unrecognised Veronique-Upper Zone, with historical drilling recording an intersection of 4.3 metres grading 1.3% WO₃. The finding adds another high-grade component to the broader mineralised system surrounding the former Salau mine.

The wider Veronique area has already returned notable historical results, including an intersection of approximately 20 metres at 1.4% WO₃. Such grades are significant in the global tungsten sector and reinforce the potential for Salau to host a substantial, high-grade mineralised system.

Expanded Veronique Target

Apollo now interprets the combined Veronique target as extending for more than 400 metres along strike and approximately 600 metres down dip. The scale of the target is important for the company’s strategy at Couflens. Apollo’s investment case rests on demonstrating that Salau was not merely a historically high-grade mine that became exhausted, but instead represents the exposed portion of a much larger tungsten system that could potentially support renewed modern exploration and development.

Salau operated from 1975 to 1986, during which the mine processed approximately 930,000 tonnes of ore grading around 1.5% WO₃. Historical records indicate that grades became particularly strong toward the end of the mine’s operating life. Parts of the Veronique zone reportedly produced material grading around 2.5% WO₃ during the final years of production. Those historical results distinguish Salau from many undeveloped tungsten projects and provide Apollo with an important geological foundation as it prepares to test the system using modern exploration techniques.

Tungsten’s Strategic Importance in Europe

The potential redevelopment of Salau comes as tungsten gains increasing strategic importance across Europe. Tungsten is widely used in hard metals, cutting and drilling tools, aerospace components, defence equipment and specialised industrial machinery. Global supply remains highly concentrated, with China dominating both tungsten mining and downstream processing.

For European manufacturers, reducing exposure to concentrated overseas supply chains has become an increasingly important industrial and strategic objective. France currently has no significant primary tungsten production, making a project such as Salau particularly relevant to efforts to develop domestic sources of critical raw materials. The combination of historic production, high-grade mineralisation and an expanded exploration target gives Salau characteristics that are relatively uncommon among European tungsten opportunities.

Modern Drilling Will Be the Key Test

Despite the encouraging historical information, the next stage of the project will depend on modern drilling and resource definition. Historical mine records and drill results provide valuable geological evidence, but they cannot replace contemporary exploration data. Apollo will ultimately need to demonstrate the grade, thickness and continuity of the mineralisation through modern drilling before a current mineral resource can be established under applicable reporting standards.

The company’s planned Phase 1 exploration programme is expected to place significant emphasis on the Veronique system. Successful drilling could mark an important transition for Salau—from a project based largely on the potential of a historic mine into a modern tungsten resource development opportunity. That transition could also have major implications for the project’s valuation and future financing prospects.

Historic Mine Provides Both Advantages and Challenges

The existence of extensive underground workings could offer certain advantages. Salau has already been physically accessed and mined, providing Apollo with an unusually detailed historical geological and operational record compared with many greenfield tungsten projects. The historic workings also introduce additional technical and environmental considerations.

Any future development would need to address the condition and stability of old underground infrastructure, groundwater management, rehabilitation and other legacy issues. Environmental standards and permitting requirements have also evolved considerably since Salau ceased production in 1986. Consequently, permitting and environmental management will be just as important as the geological results in determining whether the project can eventually return to production. The Salau project has previously encountered legal and administrative challenges, meaning that any redevelopment strategy is likely to require extensive engagement with regulators, local communities and other stakeholders.

High-Grade Tungsten Could Strengthen the Development Case

The strategic environment, however, is increasingly supportive. Europe is seeking to diversify its supply of critical raw materials, while demand for tungsten remains underpinned by defence, aerospace, manufacturing and other high-performance industrial applications.

High-grade deposits can be particularly attractive in this environment because more contained tungsten can potentially be produced from a smaller volume of mined material. Depending on the characteristics of the deposit and processing route, that can improve mining efficiency, reduce the amount of material requiring processing and potentially strengthen project economics. For Apollo Minerals, the expanding Veronique system therefore represents more than another historical exploration target. The central question now is whether modern drilling can confirm that the 400-metre-plus Veronique system contains sufficient continuous, high-grade tungsten mineralisation to support a commercially meaningful resource. If those results are confirmed, Salau could move significantly closer to becoming one of Europe’s strategically important tungsten redevelopment projects, while giving France a potential domestic source of a critical industrial metal.
