Russian Mining Stocks Led by Nornickel, Polyus and Rusal as Investors Pivot to Gold and Strategic Metals

Unlike many global mining markets where investor interest is driven by exploration breakthroughs and early-stage critical mineral discoveries, Russia’s mining industry remains dominated by a handful of large-scale producers controlling vast reserves of nickel, palladium, copper, aluminium, gold, and diamonds.

Over the past week, corporate developments across Russian mining equities were shaped less by mergers and acquisitions and more by production results, cash flow performance, and shareholder positioning. The key listed names continue to be Nornickel, Polyus, Rusal, and Alrosa, which together represent the backbone of Russia’s resource sector and a significant share of its mining market capitalization.

Nornickel Strengthens Its Position as a Global Strategic Metals Leader

The most closely watched update came from Nornickel, which reported first-quarter production results alongside updated operational guidance.

The company remains:

  • The world’s largest producer of palladium
  • One of the top global producers of nickel
  • A major supplier of copper and platinum-group metals

First-quarter output showed declines across several key commodities due to operational adjustments and mine sequencing. Management also signaled that 2026 production is expected to remain below prior-year levels for nickel, copper, palladium, and platinum.

Despite this, investor focus remains firmly on profitability and cash generation.

In 2025, Nornickel reported:

  • $13.76 billion revenue
  • $5.67 billion EBITDA
  • $2.47 billion net profit (up 36% year-on-year)
  • Approximately $3.5 billion free cash flow

These figures reinforce its position as a high-cash-flow strategic metals producer, even in a challenging geopolitical and logistical environment.

Palladium and Nickel Drive Strategic Value

Nornickel controls roughly 40% of global palladium supply, making it a cornerstone supplier for industries such as:

  • Automotive catalytic systems
  • Electronics manufacturing
  • Battery-related technologies
  • Defense applications

This dominant market position is increasingly driving investor perception of Nornickel as a strategic metals company rather than a conventional mining stock. Shareholder dynamics between Interros (controlled by Vladimir Potanin) and Rusal continue to shape sentiment, particularly around dividend policy and long-term capital allocation.

Polyus Remains One of the World’s Strongest Gold Producers

The second major pillar of Russia’s mining sector is Polyus, the country’s largest gold producer and one of the most significant global gold mining companies. The company continues to benefit from strong global gold prices, supported by macroeconomic uncertainty and sustained central bank demand.

In 2025, Polyus reported:

  • Approximately 2.53 million ounces of gold production
  • $6.35 billion adjusted EBITDA, among the highest in the global gold sector

Polyus also holds one of the world’s largest gold reserve bases, anchored by the Sukhoi Log project, which contains an estimated 43.5 million ounces of proven and probable reserves.

Sukhoi Log Drives Long-Term Growth Potential

Sukhoi Log is widely regarded as one of the most important undeveloped gold-deposits globally. Its development could significantly expand Polyus’ production profile over the next decade, reinforcing its position as a long-term growth leader in the gold sector.

Rather than pursuing aggressive acquisitions, the company continues to focus on:

  • Reserve expansion
  • Operational efficiency
  • Organic production growth

In a global environment marked by geopolitical risk and strong institutional gold demand, Polyus remains one of the most direct gold exposure vehicles among major mining equities.

Rusal’s Valuation Still Anchored to Nornickel Stake

For Rusal, the investment case continues to be closely tied to its approximately 27.8% stake in Nornickel. While global aluminium markets remain under pressure due to sanctions and shifting trade flows, Rusal’s equity value is heavily influenced by its strategic exposure to Nornickel’s earnings and dividend decisions.

Rusal remains one of the world’s largest aluminium producers and a major supplier of low-carbon aluminium, largely powered by hydroelectric energy. However, access to Western markets remains constrained compared to pre-2022 levels. As a result, investors increasingly evaluate Rusal less as a standalone aluminium producer and more as a hybrid exposure to both aluminium and strategic metals via Nornickel.

Alrosa Faces Continued Pressure from Weak Diamond Demand

The final major listed mining company, Alrosa, continues to dominate Russia’s diamond industry, accounting for roughly 95% of national production.

However, the diamond market remains under pressure due to:

  • Weak global consumer demand
  • Rising competition from lab-grown diamonds
  • Shifting luxury consumption patterns

Unlike gold and industrial metals, diamonds lack strong macro-driven demand support, making Alrosa a more cautious investment proposition in the current market environment.

Investor Preferences Shift Toward Strategic Metals and Gold

The broader trend across Russian mining equities is increasingly clear.

Investor capital is concentrating on companies exposed to:

  • Gold
  • Copper
  • Nickel
  • Palladium
  • Platinum-group metals

Meanwhile, exposure to bulk commodities and diamonds is receiving less attention.

  • Nornickel remains the dominant strategic metals leader due to its palladium and nickel dominance
  • Polyus continues to benefit from strong gold prices and world-class reserves
  • Rusal is increasingly valued through its indirect exposure to Nornickel
