The global mining sector entered 2026 focused on familiar themes: looming copper shortages, volatile lithium markets, expanding battery supply chains, and rising demand driven by artificial intelligence and clean energy technologies. A far more influential trend is rapidly redefining investment decisions across the industry. Governments around the world are increasingly rewriting the rules governing natural resources.

From Africa and Latin America to Asia and even parts of Europe, resource-rich nations are seeking a larger share of the economic benefits generated by their mineral wealth. The goal is no longer limited to attracting foreign capital and developing mines. Instead, governments want greater ownership participation, local processing industries, manufacturing capacity, employment opportunities, and stronger control over strategic supply chains. This shift, often described as the new wave of resource nationalism, is becoming one of the most important structural transformations in the global mining industry since the commodity supercycle of the early 2000s.

Critical Minerals Have Become Strategic Assets

The accelerating global energy transition has fundamentally altered the importance of mineral resources. Metals once viewed primarily as industrial commodities are now considered strategic assets essential to economic growth, technological competitiveness, and national security.

Copper is indispensable for power grids, renewable energy infrastructure, electric vehicles, and data centers. Lithium remains a cornerstone of battery manufacturing, while nickel, cobalt, graphite, and rare earth elements play critical roles in advanced technologies, defense systems, and energy storage solutions. Lithium-Rich Nations Are Redefining Investment Models

A similar debate is unfolding across South America’s renowned Lithium Triangle, which encompasses parts of Argentina, Chile, and Bolivia. These countries hold some of the world’s largest lithium resources and are central to future battery supply chains.

Each nation has adopted a different approach to balancing foreign investment with national interests. Argentina has generally maintained a relatively market-oriented framework designed to attract international capital and accelerate project development.

Chile has pursued greater state involvement in strategic resource planning, while Bolivia has historically emphasized stronger government control over lithium development. The result is a fragmented investment environment where access to world-class resources increasingly depends on a company’s ability to align with national development priorities.

Copper Demand Intensifies the Stakes

The growing importance of copper is adding further momentum to resource nationalism. Global forecasts consistently point toward substantial copper supply deficits later this decade as electrification, renewable energy deployment, grid expansion, electric vehicle production, and artificial intelligence infrastructure drive consumption higher.

Mining companies are responding through acquisitions, exploration campaigns, and major expansion projects. At the same time, governments are exploring new mechanisms to secure a larger share of future mining revenues through royalties, taxation reforms, state participation, and local processing requirements. Growing concerns about dependence on imported critical minerals—particularly from China—have prompted European policymakers to support domestic mining, refining, and processing projects more aggressively than ever before.

The United States has adopted comparable policies aimed at strengthening domestic mineral production and processing capacity. Federal incentives, industrial policy initiatives, and supply chain security programs are supporting investments in mining, refining, battery manufacturing, and advanced technology sectors.

National security concerns increasingly influence investment decisions involving critical minerals, particularly those essential to clean energy technologies, semiconductors, and defense applications. As a result, domestic resource development is becoming a strategic priority rather than purely a commercial activity.

China Maintains a Powerful Position in Global Supply Chains

While other regions seek to expand domestic capabilities, China continues to dominate many segments of the downstream critical minerals industry. The country controls substantial refining and processing capacity for numerous strategic minerals and remains heavily involved in international mining investments.

This position provides Beijing with significant influence over global supply chains that support renewable energy technologies, electric vehicles, and advanced manufacturing. As competition for critical minerals intensifies, access to resources is increasingly viewed through geopolitical as well as economic lenses.

The race to secure critical minerals is no longer solely about commodity markets. It is increasingly linked to energy security, industrial competitiveness, technological leadership, and geopolitical influence.
