Nouveau Monde Graphite (NMG) has officially started construction of the Matawinie graphite mine in Saint-Michel-des-Saints, Québec, marking a major milestone in the development of one of the largest planned integrated natural graphite production platforms in the G7.
The project represents a significant step toward building a domestic mine-to-battery materials supply chain in North America, reducing dependence on overseas graphite production and processing networks. According to the company, construction and commissioning are expected to take approximately 31 months, with commercial production targeted for the end of 2028.

The Matawinie project is designed to produce an estimated average of 106,000 tonnes of graphite annually, positioning it among the most significant planned graphite developments outside Asia. A key factor supporting the project’s advancement is the strong level of customer commitment already secured. More than 70% of anticipated production is covered through commercial agreements with strategic partners, including:
