New Copper Discovery in Bor Strengthens Serbia’s Role in Europe’s Strategic Raw Materials and Copper Supply Chain

A newly identified copper deposit in eastern Serbia is being seen as an important addition to one of Europe’s most established mining regions, reinforcing the long-term strategic importance of the Bor mining basin within the continent’s critical raw materials landscape.

Early reports describe the discovery near Bor as a large copper ore body, further expanding a geological district that has been central to European mining for more than a century. Although full resource estimates have not yet been published, the find confirms that the region still holds significant untapped potential.

The Bor area is already known as one of Europe’s most productive copper zones, with mining activity dating back to the early 1900s. Major deposits in the wider basin—such as Veliki Krivelj and Borska Reka—are among the largest copper systems in the world, collectively containing hundreds of millions to over a billion tonnes of ore across multiple sites.

Zijin Mining’s Role in Transforming Bor into a Copper Hub

The importance of the discovery is amplified by its industrial context. The Bor complex is now operated by Zijin Mining through its Serbian subsidiaries, which have significantly modernized and expanded production capacity across the region.

Together with the nearby Čukaru Peki mine, Bor has become one of Europe’s most important copper-producing hubs, with annual output reaching approximately 290,000 tonnes of copper and further expansion plans under development. In this system, new deposits are not isolated finds—they are part of a continuous resource pipeline that extends mine life and supports long-term production stability.

Copper Demand Driven by Energy Transition and Technology Growth

From an industrial standpoint, the discovery strengthens Serbia’s position in a global market where copper demand is accelerating rapidly. The metal is essential for:

  • Electric vehicles and EV infrastructure
  • Renewable energy systems such as wind and solar
  • Power grids and electrification projects
  • Expanding global tech and industrial manufacturing

As the global energy transition advances, copper is increasingly viewed as a strategic raw material, with demand expected to rise steadily over the next decade.

Integrated Mining System Reduces Development Costs

One of the key advantages of the Bor basin is its existing infrastructure. New deposits can be quickly integrated into an established system that already includes:

  • Mining operations
  • Processing facilities
  • Smelting capacity
  • Export logistics

This integrated production model significantly reduces capital costs and shortens development timelines compared to greenfield mining projects, making new discoveries more economically attractive.

The discovery also carries geopolitical significance. While Serbia is not a member of the European Union, it is geographically and economically tied to Europe’s industrial supply chains. As the EU prioritizes secure access to critical raw materials—especially copper—the Bor region plays an increasingly important role in regional supply stability. Continued resource expansion strengthens Europe’s broader strategy to reduce dependency on distant or less stable sources.

Environmental and Social Considerations Remain Central

Despite its economic importance, the Bor mining complex has long faced scrutiny regarding environmental impact. Expanding production will require careful management of:

  • Emissions and air quality
  • Tailings and waste systems
  • Water usage and contamination risks
  • Local community impacts

Balancing increased output with stricter environmental standards will be essential for long-term sustainability. Economically, copper mining remains a key pillar of Serbia’s export economy, generating substantial revenues and supporting thousands of jobs in the Bor region. However, future growth will depend on how effectively new resources are integrated into a more sustainable and regulated industrial framework.
