Mkango Expands European Rare-Earth Strategy With German Recycling Acquisition

Mkango Resources is strengthening its European rare-earth materials strategy through the acquisition of German recycling company Remloy, bringing mining, recycling and magnet-material production closer together under an integrated supply-chain model.

Mkango acquired Remloy from Heraeus for €8 million, paying €5 million at completion and agreeing to settle the remaining €3 million in August 2028. The transaction gives Mkango control of an operating rare-earth recycling facility in Germany while expanding its position across multiple stages of the magnet materials value chain.

German Facility Targets Rare-Earth Magnet Recycling

Remloy operates a commissioned facility in Bitterfeld, Germany, where it processes end-of-life rare-earth magnets using a melting-based recycling process. The facility is targeting production of at least 500 tonnes per year of neodymium-iron-boron alloy powder, which can be used in the manufacture of bonded and hot-deformed permanent magnets.

At the time of completion, Remloy held approximately 345 tonnes of magnets, alloys and other feedstock. That inventory provides material that can potentially support both Remloy’s operations and Mkango’s HyProMag recycling activities as the businesses work toward establishing commercial-scale volumes.

Mkango Builds Across the Rare-Earth Supply Chain

The acquisition expands Mkango’s exposure to several complementary stages of rare-earth processing and recycling. Its HyProMag business uses a short-loop recycling process to recover material from permanent magnets. Remloy adds a medium-loop recycling capability focused on converting magnet feedstock into alloy products.

Mkango is also evaluating longer-loop processing routes involving rare-earth separation and refining, giving the group potential exposure beyond recycling and into the production of separated materials. Alongside its European activities, the company retains interests in the Songwe Hill rare-earth project in Malawi and the proposed Pulawy separation facility in Poland. Together, these assets provide Mkango with exposure to mining, recycling, alloy production, separation and refining.

European Supply Chains Create Strategic Opportunity

The expansion comes as European manufacturers seek more secure and traceable sources of rare-earth magnet materials and aim to reduce dependence on Chinese supply chains. Recycling can provide a potentially faster route to market than developing a new mine, while established processing infrastructure may also reduce some of the permitting requirements associated with greenfield mining projects.

For Mkango, combining recycled feedstock with its broader rare-earth portfolio could create a more diversified supply model and allow the company to participate in several stages of the industry. Achieving that potential will depend on successfully scaling individual operations and securing customers for the resulting products.

Cash Requirements Remain a Key Challenge

The Remloy acquisition also increases the financial demands on Mkango as it develops several businesses simultaneously. Mkango reported $13.6 million in cash at the end of June, before making the initial payment for the German acquisition.

The company must now manage the capital requirements associated with expanding Remloy’s production, developing HyProMag, securing consistent feedstock and progressing its other rare-earth projects. Customer qualification will also be important because recycled magnet materials must meet the technical requirements of downstream manufacturers before significant commercial volumes can be established.

US Transaction Still Subject to Conditions

Mkango’s proposed US listing transaction covering its mining and separation assets remains dependent on financing, regulatory approvals and other closing conditions.

The outcome of that transaction could therefore influence the company’s ability to advance its wider portfolio and fund the development of its integrated rare-earth strategy. Mkango is assembling assets across a supply chain that includes rare-earth mining, recycling, alloy production, separation and refining. The next challenge is converting that expanding industrial footprint into sustainable commercial production and recurring revenue while managing the substantial funding requirements associated with developing multiple platforms at the same time.
