Finnish mining technology group Metso has secured an equipment order worth more than €30 million for a copper project in the Asia-Pacific region, highlighting growing demand for integrated mineral-processing systems. The customer was not disclosed.
Metso Supplies Complete Processing Package
The contract covers a broad range of equipment, including SAG and ball mills, TankCell flotation technology, high-rate thickeners, Larox filtration equipment and material-handling systems. The project will also deploy Metso’s MillSense, RockSense and FrothSense+ technologies for monitoring and process optimisation.
Around €6 million of the order was booked in Metso’s Minerals segment during the third quarter, while most of the remaining contract value had already been recognised in the second quarter. The scale and scope of the order reflect a broader shift towards purchasing integrated processing packages instead of sourcing individual equipment from several suppliers.
Copper Miners Target Higher Recovery
Copper producers are under increasing pressure to maintain throughput and recovery as ore grades decline across mature mining regions. Lower grades generally require larger volumes of material to be mined and processed to produce the same amount of copper, increasing the importance of energy efficiency, equipment availability and recovery rates. At the same time, copper demand remains closely linked to investment in electricity grids, renewable energy, electric transport and data infrastructure.
Developing new supply has become more difficult, however, with permitting delays, cost inflation, declining grades and lengthy construction periods affecting new projects. These pressures are encouraging miners to extract more value from existing and newly developed processing facilities.
Digital Technology Becomes Part of Plant Performance
Greater automation and tighter control of grinding and flotation circuits are becoming increasingly important as operators seek to improve processing performance. Digital monitoring systems can help plants respond to changing operating conditions and optimise processing parameters, with potential benefits for metal recovery, energy, water and reagent consumption.
Metso’s latest order illustrates how mining-equipment suppliers are increasingly competing beyond individual machines. OEMs are seeking to integrate complete processing circuits while adding digital technologies that can improve plant performance throughout the operating life of a mine.
Equipment Orders Create Long-Term Service Opportunities
Integrated contracts can also create opportunities beyond the initial capital sale. Once equipment becomes embedded in a processing plant, suppliers can generate additional business through spare parts, maintenance, optimisation and digital services over many years. For Metso, the €30 million-plus copper order expands its installed equipment base while strengthening its position in copper processing and related lifecycle services. The wider trend also points to a changing investment cycle in the mining and metals industry, where producers are not only developing new mines but increasingly investing in technology that can deliver higher recovery and lower unit costs from more complex ores.
