Europe’s ambitions to secure critical mineral supply extend far beyond discovering and developing new mines. This trend reflects a broader shift within the mining sector. Operators are increasingly seeking technologies that can improve recoveries, reduce operating costs, and extend asset life without requiring major capital expenditures. For companies like FLS, the growing demand for plant optimization and aftermarket services creates long-term opportunities that are less dependent on commodity price cycles.

TOMRA’s Sensor-Based Sorting Technology Reduces Waste and Energy Consumption

While grinding and flotation remain essential components of mineral processing, TOMRA is helping reshape the industry through advanced sensor-based sorting technology.

The company’s Vittangi project aims to extract graphite from the Nunasvaara South deposit, process it into concentrate, and then convert it into battery-grade anode materials at a planned refinery in Luleå.

This integrated approach aligns closely with Europe’s goal of creating domestic supply chains for electric vehicle batteries and energy storage technologies.

Similarly, GreenRoc Strategic Materials is advancing its Amitsoq graphite project with support from the European Investment Bank’s InvestEU advisory program. The project combines mining operations with planned active anode material processing, reinforcing the growing focus on value-added manufacturing within Europe. These projects highlight a critical industry trend: the greatest economic value often comes not from extracting minerals, but from processing them into specialized products used in advanced technologies.

Europe’s critical minerals strategy cannot succeed through extraction alone. The continent needs robust capabilities across the entire value chain, including:

Europe’s ability to achieve mineral security will depend not only on the mines it develops but also on the technologies that transform raw materials into usable products.
