Guardian Metal’s Pilot Mountain Tungsten Project Advances as Positive PFS Strengthens U.S. Critical Minerals Supply Chain

Guardian Metal Resources has taken a significant step toward transforming its Pilot Mountain tungsten project in Nevada from an exploration asset into a commercially defined mining development after releasing a positive pre-feasibility study (PFS). The results position the project as a potentially important domestic source of tungsten, a mineral increasingly viewed as essential to the United States’ industrial, aerospace and defense sectors.

Beyond the project’s strong financial metrics, the study highlights Pilot Mountain’s strategic value at a time when the U.S. government and its allies are working to secure reliable supplies of critical minerals and reduce dependence on concentrated overseas supply chains.

Pre-Feasibility Study Highlights Strong Project Economics

Guardian Metal’s pre-feasibility study outlines an economically attractive development scenario for Pilot Mountain, with robust returns under the base-case assumptions.

According to the study, the project is expected to deliver:

  • an after-tax net present value (NPV8) of US$660.3 million;
  • an internal rate of return (IRR) of 59.6%;
  • an estimated payback period of approximately one year.

Over an initial eight-year mine life, Pilot Mountain is projected to produce 15,916 tonnes of recovered tungsten trioxide (WO₃) while generating approximately US$1.058 billion in after-tax free cash flow.

Development costs include:

  • US$288.7 million in initial capital expenditure;
  • US$33.9 million in sustaining capital;
  • US$22.3 million allocated for mine closure and reclamation.

The financial outlook strengthens the project’s investment case as demand for strategic minerals continues to grow.

Conventional Mining Plan Targets First Production in 2028

The proposed operation has been designed as a conventional open-pit mine supported by a 4,000-tonne-per-day processing plant. The processing circuit would use flotation technology to produce a marketable tungsten concentrate suitable for downstream refining.

Guardian Metal expects the development timeline to support:

  • commencement of federal permitting;
  • detailed engineering and project optimization;
  • first ore processed through the mill during the fourth quarter of 2028.

The company said the pre-feasibility study provides the technical foundation for submitting a Mine Plan of Operations to the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) as part of the federal National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) permitting process. Securing environmental approvals will be one of the most important milestones before construction can begin.

Tungsten Gains Strategic Importance in U.S. Critical Minerals Policy

The significance of Pilot Mountain extends well beyond its financial performance.

Tungsten is widely recognized as one of the world’s most strategically important industrial metals because of its exceptional hardness, high melting point and resistance to wear.

It is used extensively in:

  • aerospace manufacturing;
  • defense systems;
  • industrial machinery;
  • cutting tools;
  • advanced engineering applications.

The United States included tungsten on its final 2025 Critical Minerals List, alongside other strategically important materials such as:

  • copper;
  • graphite;
  • dysprosium;
  • terbium;
  • yttrium.

As governments seek to strengthen domestic manufacturing and national security, reliable supplies of these materials have become an increasingly important policy objective.

Domestic Tungsten Production Could Strengthen U.S. Supply Security

Guardian Metal has positioned Pilot Mountain as an opportunity to help restore domestic tungsten mining in the United States. The project aligns with broader federal efforts aimed at rebuilding secure supply chains for minerals considered essential to defense readiness and advanced manufacturing.

This strategic positioning could provide advantages beyond traditional project economics.

Potential benefits may include:

  • stronger government support;
  • improved access to project financing;
  • increased interest from strategic investors;
  • long-term offtake opportunities with industrial customers.

As Western governments continue efforts to diversify supply chains away from concentrated global production, domestically located projects may receive increasing commercial and policy support.

Development Risks Remain Despite Positive Economics

Although the pre-feasibility study significantly advances the project, Pilot Mountain remains a development-stage asset.

Several factors will continue to influence its progress toward production, including:

  • environmental permitting;
  • project financing;
  • detailed engineering;
  • future tungsten prices;
  • construction execution.

The relatively short initial mine life outlined in the current study may also become an area of investor focus, with future exploration potentially offering opportunities to expand the resource base and extend operations. As with all mining developments, successful execution will be essential to converting favourable economics into long-term commercial production.

Pilot Mountain Moves Beyond Exploration

The release of the pre-feasibility study marks an important transition for Guardian Metal Resources. Pilot Mountain is no longer defined solely by exploration potential. It now has a detailed economic framework, a proposed development strategy and a clearer regulatory pathway toward becoming a producing tungsten mine. Located in Nevada—one of the world’s leading mining jurisdictions—the project combines attractive financial metrics with growing strategic importance as governments prioritize secure supplies of critical minerals. If Guardian Metal successfully advances permitting, financing and construction, Pilot Mountain could emerge as a key contributor to rebuilding domestic U.S. tungsten production while supporting industries increasingly dependent on reliable sources of strategic raw materials.
