Greenland Resources Secures Canadian Funding to Expand Malmbjerg into a Multi-Mineral Arctic Project

Greenland Resources has received final approval for a US$7 million non-repayable grant from the Government of Canada to advance development activities at its Malmbjerg molybdenum project in Greenland. The funding will support a multi-year research and development program focused on molybdenum optimization, magnesium recovery, and the evaluation of rare earth element by-products, with work scheduled to continue through March 2028.

The grant represents more than financial support for a single mining project. It highlights the growing strategic cooperation among G7 nations aimed at strengthening secure and diversified critical minerals supply chains, particularly in the Arctic, where resource development is gaining geopolitical importance.

Malmbjerg Evolves Beyond a Standalone Molybdenum Mine

Traditionally viewed as one of the world’s significant undeveloped molybdenum deposits, the Malmbjerg project is now being positioned as a broader multi-mineral development opportunity.

The new research program seeks to optimize molybdenum production while assessing the commercial potential of recovering magnesium and rare earth elements from existing process streams, mineral concentrates, and related extraction methods.

If these additional minerals can be recovered economically, the project could evolve from a single-commodity operation into an integrated critical minerals platform capable of supplying several strategically important raw materials for advanced manufacturing, clean energy technologies, and industrial applications.

Canadian Support Reflects Broader G7 Critical Minerals Strategy

The Canadian government’s decision to finance work on a Greenland mining project underscores the increasingly international nature of critical minerals policy. Rather than focusing solely on domestic resource development, governments are expanding cooperation with allied jurisdictions to reduce dependence on concentrated global supply chains and improve access to strategically important metals.

The Malmbjerg project fits within this broader framework by offering the potential to supply critical industrial materials from a politically stable Arctic region that is attracting growing international investment. Greenland Resources continues to cite the findings of its 2022 NI 43-101 feasibility study, which outlines robust financial projections for the Malmbjerg development. According to the study, the project would require an estimated capital investment of US$820 million while delivering a leveraged after-tax internal rate of return (IRR) of 33.8% and a projected payback period of 2.4 years, based on a molybdenum price of US$18 per pound.

The project hosts proven and probable mineral reserves totaling 245 million tonnes grading 0.176% molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂), equivalent to approximately 571 million pounds of contained molybdenum metal. These figures position Malmbjerg among the more significant undeveloped molybdenum assets globally.

Technical Validation Will Be the Next Critical Milestone

While the project’s economic fundamentals appear attractive, the next phase of development will depend on technical execution rather than financial projections alone. Successfully recovering magnesium and rare earth elements from seawater, mineral concentrates, or processing streams will require extensive metallurgical testing, process optimization, and careful cost management.

Demonstrating commercially viable recovery methods while maintaining high environmental standards will be essential before any additional by-product opportunities can be incorporated into the project’s long-term development strategy. The Canadian grant provides funding for precisely this stage of technical evaluation, allowing Greenland Resources to reduce development risk while exploring opportunities to enhance the overall value of the project.

Arctic Critical Minerals Could Gain Strategic Importance

As governments seek to diversify supplies of critical raw materials, Arctic mining projects are attracting increased attention from investors and policymakers alike. If Greenland Resources can successfully demonstrate efficient recovery of multiple strategic minerals alongside its primary molybdenum production, Malmbjerg could become a more diversified and resilient mining operation capable of serving a broader range of industrial markets.
