Greenland Mines Secures Strategic Iceland Processing Hub to Advance Western Critical Minerals Supply Chains

Greenland Mines has moved closer to establishing a fully integrated North Atlantic critical minerals supply chain after securing a contractual first right of refusal over the Helguvík industrial complex in southwest Iceland. The strategic site includes approximately 60,000 square meters of industrial land, around 10,000 square meters of existing infrastructure, access to a deep-water port, and up to 40 megawatts of grid-connected power capacity.

The agreement builds upon a previously signed Letter of Intent from April and provides Greenland Mines with the option to acquire the facility if current owner Reykjanes Investment receives an offer from another party. The move forms a key component of the company’s long-term development plans for the Skaergaard Project, one of Greenland’s largest undeveloped deposits containing both precious metals and critical raw materials.

While the arrangement may appear to be a straightforward industrial property transaction, its broader significance lies in what it represents for the future of Western critical minerals production. The Helguvík facility could become an essential link in a new transatlantic supply chain designed to connect Greenland’s vast mineral resources with industrial consumers across Europe and North America.

Transforming Arctic Resources Into Competitive Supply Chains

One of the greatest challenges facing mining companies operating in remote Arctic regions is the development of economically viable processing infrastructure. Resource-rich locations often lack the industrial facilities, energy supply, and logistics networks needed to compete with established global supply chains. The Helguvík complex offers a potential solution.

Located adjacent to one of Iceland’s deepest harbors and only a short distance from Keflavík International Airport, the site already possesses many of the essential components required for large-scale industrial operations. Existing assets include heavy industrial buildings, high-voltage power connections, water systems, logistics facilities, and a former 33 MW electric arc furnace.

By repurposing existing infrastructure rather than constructing entirely new facilities, Greenland Mines could significantly reduce development timelines and lower capital expenditure requirements. This approach reflects a growing trend across the mining sector, where companies increasingly seek to leverage existing industrial assets to accelerate project development and improve project economics.

Iceland’s Renewable Energy Advantage

A major attraction of the Helguvík site is its access to Iceland’s world-renowned renewable energy network. Unlike many industrial regions that remain heavily dependent on fossil fuels, Iceland generates nearly all of its electricity from hydroelectric and geothermal energy. This provides industrial users with access to some of the lowest-carbon electricity available anywhere in the developed world.

For mineral processing operations, energy costs represent one of the largest long-term expenses. Greenland Mines has previously emphasized that industrial power costs in Iceland could be substantially lower than those available in diesel-reliant Arctic locations, creating a significant competitive advantage over the life of a mining project. Access to reliable, low-cost, and low-carbon electricity also aligns closely with the growing demands of manufacturers and governments seeking cleaner and more sustainable supply chains for critical raw materials.

Building a North Atlantic Critical Minerals Corridor

The company’s broader vision extends beyond a single processing facility. Greenland Mines is working toward the creation of a North Atlantic critical minerals corridor, linking Greenland’s mineral wealth with Iceland’s industrial infrastructure before supplying end-users throughout Europe and North America.

Under this concept, ore or mineral concentrates extracted from Greenland could be transported approximately 400 kilometers across the North Atlantic to Iceland, where processing and refining activities could take place using renewable energy. Processed materials would then enter Western industrial supply chains through established transportation networks. This strategy offers a potential alternative to existing global processing routes, many of which remain concentrated in Asia.

Europe’s Push for Secure Critical Raw Materials

The timing of Greenland Mines’ move is particularly significant as European governments accelerate efforts to secure supplies of critical minerals needed for the energy transition. Materials used in electric vehicles, battery technologies, wind turbines, defense systems, advanced manufacturing, and clean-energy infrastructure have become increasingly important strategic resources. Policymakers across Europe are actively seeking to reduce dependence on external supply chains and establish more secure sources of critical raw materials. Greenland has emerged as a key part of those plans due to its extensive undeveloped mineral resources and strong political alignment with Western economies.

The European Union has already established a strategic raw materials partnership with Greenland aimed at integrating the island’s mineral potential into future European industrial value chains. As demand for critical minerals continues to rise, projects capable of supplying Western markets from politically stable jurisdictions are attracting growing interest from governments and investors alike.

A New Future for the Helguvík Industrial Complex

For Iceland, the Helguvík project represents an opportunity to revive and repurpose a major industrial asset. The site has remained largely underutilized since the closure of the former United Silicon operation. However, its industrial foundations, power infrastructure, logistics capabilities, and grid connections could become increasingly valuable as Europe searches for locations capable of supporting energy-intensive processing activities.

Rather than developing entirely new industrial hubs, governments and companies are increasingly recognizing the advantages of upgrading and modernizing existing facilities to meet future critical minerals demand. The Helguvík complex is well positioned to benefit from this trend.

Mining Competitiveness Is Evolving

The agreement also highlights a broader transformation taking place throughout the global mining industry. Historically, project success depended largely on the size and quality of a mineral deposit. Today, competitiveness increasingly depends on access to processing capacity, renewable energy, transportation infrastructure, and secure supply chains.

Mining companies capable of integrating all of these elements into a single development strategy may enjoy significant advantages when it comes to project financing, permitting approvals, customer relationships, and long-term profitability. As governments and manufacturers place greater emphasis on supply-chain security and sustainability, vertically integrated projects are becoming increasingly attractive.

Reducing Dependence on Asian Processing Capacity

For Europe and North America, one of the most important aspects of the Greenland-Iceland strategy is its potential to diversify mineral processing away from existing global bottlenecks. Today, much of the world’s critical minerals processing remains concentrated in Asia, particularly in China. This concentration has become a growing concern for policymakers seeking resilient and geopolitically secure supply chains.

A processing network linking Greenland’s resource base with Iceland’s renewable-powered industrial infrastructure could provide a Western-aligned alternative capable of supplying strategic industries with greater transparency and security. Greenland Mines has described the concept as the foundation for a larger Atlantic critical minerals ecosystem connecting Greenland, Iceland, Europe, and North America through integrated resource and processing networks.

The Future of Critical Minerals Development

Whether Helguvík ultimately evolves into a major processing center will depend on future engineering studies, permitting processes, economic assessments, and investment decisions. Nevertheless, the agreement highlights a powerful trend reshaping the global mining sector.

Ownership of a mineral deposit alone is no longer sufficient. Access to renewable energy, downstream processing capacity, industrial infrastructure, and secure logistics networks is becoming equally important in determining project success. As Europe accelerates implementation of its Critical Raw Materials Strategy and broader decarbonization goals, projects capable of combining upstream mineral resources with renewable-powered processing and secure Western supply chains are expected to attract increasing attention from governments, industrial consumers, and investors.

Greenland Mines’ latest move demonstrates how the future of critical minerals development may be built not only on geology, but also on strategic infrastructure, energy security, and supply-chain integration. In an increasingly competitive global market, those factors could prove just as valuable as the resources themselves.
