Greenland Mines Eyes Iceland Processing Hub to Create North Atlantic Critical Minerals Corridor

Greenland Mines is advancing an ambitious strategy to strengthen Western critical minerals supply chains by securing access to industrial infrastructure in Iceland, a move designed to connect Greenland’s mineral resources with renewable-powered processing and global export markets. The initiative reflects a broader shift in the mining industry, where ownership of downstream infrastructure is becoming as strategically important as the mineral deposits themselves.

Helguvík Site Offers Strategic Industrial Infrastructure

The Nasdaq-listed company has signed an updated letter of intent with Reykjanes Investment, giving Greenland Mines a contractual first right of refusal over the Helguvík industrial site on Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula.

The approximately 60,000-square-metre brownfield complex includes around 10,000 square metres of existing industrial buildings, deep-water port access and up to 40 MW of available electricity, creating an attractive location for future mineral processing operations. While the agreement does not represent a final investment decision or grant mining or processing permits, it provides Greenland Mines with an option to secure key industrial infrastructure that could significantly accelerate future project development.

In today’s critical minerals market, access to established industrial facilities, power supplies and logistics networks is increasingly viewed as a competitive advantage capable of lowering development risks and reducing capital expenditure.

Building a North Atlantic Critical Minerals Supply Chain

Greenland Mines currently owns the Skaergaard precious and critical metals project in southeast Greenland and is progressing the acquisition of the Sarfartoq neodymium-praseodymium (Nd-Pr) rare earth project in southwest Greenland. By combining Greenland’s mineral resources with Iceland’s renewable energy and industrial facilities, the company aims to establish what it describes as a North Atlantic Critical Metals Corridor.

The strategy is intended to create an integrated value chain linking Arctic mining operations with downstream processing, efficient maritime transport and direct access to both European and North American customers. Rather than operating solely as a traditional junior mining company focused on resource exploration, Greenland Mines is positioning itself as a vertically integrated critical minerals developer.

Logistics Could Become a Competitive Advantage

The Helguvík site already possesses many of the industrial assets that new processing facilities often require. Located adjacent to one of Iceland’s deepest harbours, the site benefits from existing industrial land, port infrastructure, electrical grid connections and heavy industrial buildings. It also sits close to Keflavík International Airport and the municipality of Reykjanesbær, improving transportation and workforce accessibility.

According to preliminary logistics studies referenced by the company, bulk cargo vessels could transport mineral concentrates from the Skaergaard project to Helguvík across the roughly 400-kilometre sea route in approximately 30 hours. Although efficient logistics alone cannot guarantee a commercially viable processing operation, the relatively short shipping distance provides a practical route for moving mineral concentrates from Greenland to an established industrial hub.

Renewable Energy Supports Low-Carbon Mineral Processing

One of Iceland’s strongest advantages lies in its electricity system. The country’s power generation is supplied almost entirely by renewable energy, primarily from hydroelectric and geothermal resources, making it one of the world’s lowest-carbon electricity markets.

Official figures from the Icelandic Environment and Energy Agency show annual electricity production of 14,195 GWh from hydropower, 5,916 GWh from geothermal energy, and 5 GWh from wind generation. Data from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) indicate Iceland generated approximately 20,245 GWh of electricity in 2023, with nearly 100% renewable production, consisting of roughly 70% hydropower and 30% geothermal energy.

For energy-intensive mineral processing, access to renewable electricity offers multiple advantages, including lower carbon emissions, improved sustainability credentials, greater attractiveness to European industrial buyers and potential cost benefits.

EU Critical Raw Materials Policy Creates Additional Momentum

The project aligns closely with the objectives of the European Union’s Critical Raw Materials Act, which seeks to reduce Europe’s dependence on imported strategic minerals. The legislation establishes ambitious targets for 2030, including producing at least 10% of annual EU consumption through domestic extraction, processing 40% within the Union and recycling 25% of annual demand.

The Act also aims to prevent the EU from relying on any single non-EU supplier for more than 65% of its annual consumption of strategic raw materials. Rare earth elements are central to these policy goals, with the European Commission forecasting significant growth in European demand by both 2030 and 2050 as electrification and clean-energy technologies continue expanding.

Brownfield Redevelopment Could Reduce Development Costs

From an investment perspective, the Helguvík site offers advantages that greenfield industrial developments often lack. Existing infrastructure includes roads, utility connections, industrial buildings, harbour facilities and grid access that could reduce early-stage construction costs and shorten development timelines.

Among the site’s key assets is an 8,376-square-metre former furnace building spread across five floors. The facility includes bridge cranes, infrastructure from a former 33 MW electric arc furnace, incoming 33 kV electrical supply converted to 400 volts, fibre-optic communications, compressed air systems and freshwater boreholes. While these existing assets could lower redevelopment costs, any future mineral processing facility would still require comprehensive engineering redesign, environmental assessments, financing and regulatory approvals.

Environmental Legacy Remains an Important Consideration

The Helguvík industrial area carries a significant environmental history. The site previously hosted the United Silicon metal production plant, which operated during 2016 and 2017 before shutting down following operational difficulties and environmental complaints related to dust and atmospheric emissions affecting nearby communities. Greenland Mines has stated that it has no intention of restarting similar metallurgical operations. Instead, the company says any future processing activities would focus on modern technologies designed to minimise environmental impacts while complying with Iceland’s strict environmental regulations.

Nevertheless, investors and regulators are expected to closely examine future project designs, emissions management systems, waste treatment plans, environmental monitoring programmes and overall processing technology before granting approvals.

Sarfartoq Acquisition Expands Rare Earth Strategy

Greenland Mines is simultaneously strengthening its upstream rare earth portfolio through the proposed acquisition of the Sarfartoq project. Earlier this year, Neo Performance Materials agreed to transfer ownership of the company holding the Sarfartoq rare earth licence for a total transaction value of US$35 million, consisting of US$20 million in cash and US$15 million in Greenland Mines shares.

The agreement also allows Neo Performance Materials to retain strategic exposure through its equity stake and potential offtake rights covering up to 60% of future ore or mineral concentrate production. This structure provides Greenland Mines with an experienced downstream industry partner while creating a potential long-term sales channel for future production.

Rare Earth Demand Continues to Grow

The Sarfartoq deposit is particularly attractive because it contains significant concentrations of neodymium and praseodymium, two of the world’s most sought-after rare earth elements. These materials are essential for manufacturing high-performance permanent magnets used in electric vehicles, wind turbines, advanced electric motors, consumer electronics and defence technologies.

Greenland Mines plans to reopen the Sarfartoq exploration camp later in 2026 to conduct additional geological mapping, verify historical exploration data and complete environmental baseline studies required for an exploitation licence application. Although the project already benefits from previous drilling campaigns, metallurgical testing and a 2011 Preliminary Economic Assessment, updated technical studies will be necessary before investors can fully evaluate its commercial potential under current market conditions.

Skaergaard Remains the Company’s Flagship Asset

Alongside Sarfartoq, the Skaergaard project remains Greenland Mines’ principal development asset. The company reports an NI 43-101 compliant mineral resource estimate, published in November 2022, containing approximately 11.4 million ounces of palladium-equivalent (PdEq) indicated resources and 14.1 million ounces of PdEq inferred resources.

These figures represent mineral resources rather than proven reserves. No Preliminary Economic Assessment, pre-feasibility study or definitive feasibility study has yet been completed, meaning the project’s commercial viability has not been fully established. While access to the Helguvík processing site strengthens the overall development strategy, it does not by itself convert mineral resources into economically recoverable reserves.

Long-Term Strategy Focuses on Integrated Critical Minerals Development

Greenland Mines is pursuing a phased strategy centred on building an integrated North Atlantic critical minerals platform rather than delivering immediate production. The company is assembling complementary assets that include Greenland’s mineral resources, Iceland’s renewable-powered industrial infrastructure, established port logistics, potential rare earth offtake agreements and exposure to growing demand from both Europe and North America.

Success, however, will depend on a series of milestones, including updated resource estimates, metallurgical testing, environmental permitting, engineering studies, financing, community engagement and favourable commodity market conditions.

The Helguvík agreement strengthens Greenland Mines’ downstream development options, but investors will ultimately look for concrete progress through technical studies, environmental approvals, commercial partnerships and capital investment before the broader vision of a North Atlantic critical minerals corridor can become reality.
