Greenland Emerges as Critical Minerals Frontline as Graphite, Rare Earths and Molybdenum Projects Advance

Greenland is rapidly becoming a key testing ground for the future of Western critical mineral supply chains, with major projects targeting graphite, rare earth elements and molybdenum gaining international attention.

The island’s mineral potential is attracting interest from Europe and North America as governments seek alternatives to China-dominated supply chains. Greenland is also demonstrating that strategic importance alone does not guarantee project approval. The emerging investment landscape shows a clear divide: projects aligned with government priorities and local policy objectives are advancing, while developments facing regulatory or social concerns continue to encounter obstacles.

Amitsoq Graphite Project Strengthens Greenland’s Battery Materials Ambitions

One of Greenland’s strongest critical mineral opportunities is GreenRoc Strategic Materials’ Amitsoq graphite project.

The project has already secured several important milestones, including:

  • a 30-year exploitation licence;
  • designation as an EU Strategic Project;
  • a JORC mineral resource of 23.05 million tonnes grading 20.41% graphite.

GreenRoc said the European Investment Bank (EIB) will provide independent advisory support for the Amitsoq mine and planned active anode material processing facility.

The support will include:

  • market analysis;
  • technical and economic assessments;
  • business-plan evaluation;
  • financial modelling.

The development is significant because graphite has moved beyond being viewed simply as a mining commodity. It is now considered a critical component of the global battery supply chain.

Graphite Processing Becomes Central to Supply Chain Strategy

The importance of Amitsoq lies not only in its graphite resource but also in its potential downstream role. Graphite is the primary material used in lithium-ion battery anodes, making processing capability just as important as mining capacity. GreenRoc reported that its pilot programme has already processed approximately 700 kilograms of 95% graphite concentrate into spherical graphite through seven separate test runs.

The company is also advancing exploration, with the Government of Greenland approving Phase III drilling at Amitsoq, scheduled to begin at the end of June 2026. Successful development of both mining and processing capacity could position Amitsoq as part of Europe’s effort to build a more secure battery materials supply chain.

Malmbjerg Highlights Greenland’s Molybdenum Potential

Greenland’s strategic mineral importance is also expanding through molybdenum, a metal used in high-performance applications including:

  • aerospace;
  • energy infrastructure;
  • defense technologies;
  • specialty steels.

Greenland Resources’ Malmbjerg project received additional support after securing final approval for a C$7 million non-repayable contribution from the Government of Canada for metallurgical studies. The company said the investment represents the first time a G7 government has directly supported a mining project in Greenland.

Malmbjerg is a 100%-owned primary molybdenum project supported by a 2022 definitive feasibility study, which outlined:

  • approximately US$820 million in capital expenditure;
  • a levered after-tax internal rate of return of 33.8% at a molybdenum price of US$18 per pound.

The project illustrates growing government interest in securing supplies of metals considered essential for industrial resilience.

Rare Earth Development Advances at Tanbreez

Rare earth elements remain another major focus of Greenland’s mineral strategy.

Critical Metals Corp.’s Tanbreez rare earth project in southern Greenland has entered a new exploration phase with a planned 10,000-metre diamond drilling campaign.

The company said the programme is designed to support:

  • resource expansion;
  • geological modelling;
  • mine planning;
  • future development studies.

Tanbreez is positioned as one of the world’s largest undeveloped rare earth projects, with significant heavy rare earth content.

These materials are particularly valuable because they are used in:

  • permanent magnets;
  • electric vehicles;
  • wind energy systems;
  • defense technologies;
  • advanced manufacturing.

As Western economies attempt to reduce dependence on concentrated rare earth supply chains, projects such as Tanbreez are receiving increased strategic attention.

Kuannersuit Decision Shows Greenland’s Regulatory Boundaries

Despite the positive momentum around several projects, Greenland’s mining sector is not open to every development. The government rejected Energy Transition Minerals’ request to renew the exploration licence for the Kuannersuit (Kvanefjeld) rare earth project.

The decision was linked to Greenland’s uranium legislation, with authorities stating that further exploration was unlikely to result in deposits that could be developed under the country’s uranium regulations. The outcome highlights the importance of environmental policy, political support and social acceptance in determining which mineral projects move forward.

Critical Minerals Strategy Requires More Than Geology

Greenland’s emerging mining sector demonstrates the complexity of developing new critical mineral supply chains. Projects such as Amitsoq, Malmbjerg and Tanbreez show that Greenland has the geological potential to become an important supplier of materials needed for the energy transition and advanced industries.

At the same time, the Kuannersuit decision shows that projects facing regulatory challenges or community concerns can still be blocked, even when they involve minerals considered strategically important by Western governments.

Greenland Becomes a Test of Western Mineral Independence

For investors, Greenland is not simply a critical minerals opportunity based on resource potential.

The island represents a much more complex equation involving:

  • geology;
  • geopolitical importance;
  • environmental standards;
  • government policy;
  • local acceptance.

The projects that succeed will be those capable of aligning all of these factors.

As Europe and North America accelerate efforts to secure alternative sources of strategic materials, Greenland is emerging as a crucial test of whether Western countries can build new mineral supply chains while balancing economic ambitions with environmental and social priorities.
