Greenland Approves 30-Year Mining Permit for EU-Backed Molybdenum Project

Greenland has granted a long-term mining permit to a European-supported critical metals project, strengthening the European Union’s strategic push to secure raw materials from politically aligned jurisdictions. The licence authorises operations for 30 years, offering the regulatory stability required for large-scale investment and long-horizon project planning.

The development is focused on molybdenum, a metal classified as strategically vital for aerospace, energy infrastructure, advanced manufacturing and defence technologies. European involvement underscores ongoing efforts to diversify critical-mineral supply chains away from China and reduce dependence on imports sourced outside trusted partner regions.

Greenlandic authorities have positioned the approval within a broader framework aimed at attracting Western capital and technical expertise, while maintaining strict environmental oversight and regulatory control. Commitments related to infrastructure investment, environmental protection and local employment form key conditions attached to the permit.

For European industry, the project offers a rare opportunity to anchor long-term molybdenum supply in an Arctic jurisdiction that combines geopolitical alignment, resource longevity and transparent governance. The permit marks a tangible step in Europe’s wider strategy to localise and secure access to critical raw materials.
