Great Southern Copper Launches Drilling at Victoria Target as Chilean Porphyry Discovery Potential Grows

Great Southern Copper has commenced a new drilling campaign at its Victoria porphyry target in Chile, marking another important step in the company’s strategy to unlock the large-scale mineral potential of its Especularita Project.

The Victoria prospect sits along the southern margin of the highly prospective La Colorada lithocap, where geological, geochemical, and spectral data indicate the potential presence of a significant porphyry copper system. The initial program will consist of four reverse circulation (RC) drill holes designed to test both high-grade vein-style mineralization and broader disseminated copper mineralization identified at surface.

The campaign is expected to provide critical information about the scale, grade, and continuity of mineralization beneath historical artisanal workings, while also helping geologists evaluate the broader porphyry potential of the area.

Historic Workings Reveal Impressive Copper, Gold, and Silver Grades

Victoria has already demonstrated strong exploration credentials through previous surface sampling programs.

Rock chip assays collected from the target returned grades of up to:

  • 6.9% copper
  • 1.85 grams per tonne gold
  • 84.8 grams per tonne silver

These results were obtained from areas associated with historical small-scale mining activity, where copper and gold extraction took place long before modern exploration techniques were applied.

The current drilling program will test beneath these old workings to determine whether the high-grade mineralization extends at depth and whether it is linked to a larger porphyry system.

Such a discovery could significantly enhance the economic potential of the project by combining high-grade structures with a larger bulk-tonnage mineralized system.

Artemisa North Results Strengthen Exploration Model

The Victoria campaign follows encouraging progress at the nearby Artemisa North target, where a recently completed five-hole reverse circulation drilling program confirmed evidence of a strong porphyry-style copper alteration system.

These results provide additional support for Great Southern Copper’s geological interpretation that the broader La Colorada lithocap may host multiple mineralized centers. Exploration is currently focused on the western and southern margins of the lithocap, where geological indicators closely resemble those associated with major copper porphyry deposits worldwide.

Management believes that each successful drill program is contributing to a growing body of evidence pointing toward the existence of a potentially significant district-scale copper system.

Strategic Location Near Major South American Copper Deposits

One of Victoria’s most attractive features is its location within one of the world’s premier copper-producing regions. The target lies along the same regional geological trend that hosts several major South American copper deposits, including Los Pelambres, Altar, and El Pachón.

This highly productive mineral corridor has generated some of the largest copper discoveries in the Andes and remains a prime destination for global mining investment. Unlike many Andean exploration projects located at extreme altitudes, Victoria benefits from a relatively low-elevation setting, providing easier access and reducing potential logistical challenges associated with future development.

Especularita Project Occupies Prime Position in Chile’s Coastal Copper Belt

The Victoria target forms part of Great Southern Copper’s broader Especularita Project, which covers a substantial land package within Chile’s renowned coastal metallogenic belt.

This prolific mining region hosts numerous producing mines and advanced development projects, including Carmen de Andacollo Mine.

The district offers several strategic advantages, including:

  • Established mining infrastructure
  • Reliable road networks
  • Access to electrical power
  • Nearby ports and export facilities
  • Experienced mining workforce
  • Supportive mining regulations

These factors could significantly reduce future development costs if commercial mineralization is identified.

The presence of extensive historical copper and gold workings throughout the project area also highlights the district’s long history of mineral production and reinforces confidence in its exploration potential.

Company Advances Multi-Target Porphyry Exploration Strategy

According to Chief Executive Officer Sam Garrett, Victoria is the third of four targets scheduled for testing under the company’s current scout drilling program.

The exploration strategy is focused on identifying geological features commonly associated with major porphyry copper systems while simultaneously evaluating high-grade mineralized structures exposed in historical workings.

Garrett noted that drilling at both Piedras Blancas and Artemisa North has already been completed successfully, providing valuable geological information that strengthens confidence in the overall prospectivity of the La Colorada lithocap.

The company believes that combining drilling results with geochemical, geological, and spectral datasets will help build a clearer understanding of the mineral system and identify priority targets for future exploration.

Metallurgical Studies Add Another Layer of Value

Beyond drilling, Great Southern Copper has already initiated metallurgical studies designed to evaluate potential processing routes for any future mineral resources.

Early metallurgical insights can play an important role in determining project economics by helping identify efficient extraction methods and potential recovery rates. While exploration remains at an early stage, the company’s proactive approach to metallurgy demonstrates a commitment to understanding both the geological and economic aspects of the project.

Discovery Could Transform Project Economics

Industry observers note that Victoria and the broader Especularita Project possess several advantages that could significantly enhance development potential if a major discovery is made. The combination of strong surface mineralization, encouraging drilling results from nearby targets, established infrastructure, coastal access, and a stable mining jurisdiction creates a compelling exploration opportunity.

Unlike many large copper projects located deep in the Andes that require substantial capital investments and complex logistics, Especularita benefits from a setting that could support a more straightforward development pathway.

Should drilling confirm the presence of one or more economically viable copper-gold porphyry deposits, the project could emerge as an attractive future development asset within one of the world’s most important copper-producing nations.

Chile Remains a Global Leader in Copper Discovery Potential

As global demand for copper, gold, and other critical raw materials continues to rise due to electrification, renewable energy expansion, and advanced technologies, exploration success in established mining jurisdictions has become increasingly important.

Chile remains the world’s leading copper producer and continues to attract exploration investment thanks to its exceptional geological endowment and mature mining infrastructure.

For Great Southern Copper, the Victoria drilling campaign represents an important opportunity to test one of the most promising targets within its growing portfolio and potentially uncover the next significant copper discovery in one of the world’s most prolific mining districts.
