Swiss-based Glencore is preparing to bring the Alumbrera copper-gold operation in Argentina back into production, transforming a dormant mining complex into a potential new source of copper, gold and molybdenum while laying important infrastructure foundations for the larger Agua Rica development.
The restart is scheduled to begin during the fourth quarter of 2026, with first production targeted for the first half of 2028. Once fully operational, Alumbrera is expected to produce approximately 75,000 tonnes of copper, 317,000 ounces of gold and 1,000 tonnes of molybdenum per year. The project offers Glencore an important advantage over a conventional greenfield mine: much of the required infrastructure is already in place.
Existing Infrastructure Could Accelerate Copper Production
Alumbrera’s previous operating history means Glencore does not need to build an entirely new mining and processing complex from scratch. Existing processing facilities, power infrastructure, transportation links and site knowledge could reduce construction requirements and shorten the timeline between project restart and commercial production.
That brownfield advantage could be particularly valuable in an environment where new copper mines face rising construction costs, lengthy permitting processes and increasingly complex infrastructure requirements. Existing infrastructure does not eliminate development risk. After an extended period outside normal operation, Glencore must determine the condition of major components across the site, including processing equipment, pipelines, electrical systems, tailings infrastructure and process-control installations.
Refurbishment Costs Will Be Closely Watched
The condition of dormant equipment will be one of the most important variables in the restart programme. Components that appear serviceable during an initial inspection can require replacement once dismantled, tested or subjected to operating loads. Electrical and control systems can also present compatibility challenges when older infrastructure is integrated with modern equipment.
These issues can push refurbishment costs higher and extend the schedule. Glencore’s four-year restart programme provides time to undertake inspections, complete staged rehabilitation, confirm resources and secure long-lead equipment. Nevertheless, inflation and contractor availability could add further pressure to the project budget. The company’s ability to control these risks will determine how effectively Alumbrera can capture the economic advantage of its existing infrastructure.
Gold Provides an Important Economic Buffer
Alumbrera is not simply a copper restart. Projected annual production of approximately 317,000 ounces of gold gives the operation a substantial precious-metals revenue stream alongside its copper output. That gold production could strengthen project economics by offsetting a significant portion of copper-related operating costs. It could also provide greater resilience if copper prices weaken during periods of market volatility.
The combination of copper, gold and molybdenum creates a diversified revenue profile that could make the restarted operation more robust than a single-commodity development.
Alumbrera Could Become the Infrastructure Base for Agua Rica
The strategic importance of the restart extends well beyond Alumbrera’s own production. Glencore intends to use the existing mining complex and associated infrastructure to support the development of nearby Agua Rica, potentially allowing the larger copper-gold project to avoid duplicating some of the infrastructure already available at Alumbrera.
This could have a major impact on Agua Rica’s eventual capital requirements. Rather than developing a completely independent processing and logistics system, Agua Rica could potentially benefit from existing facilities, transport infrastructure and operational expertise associated with the restarted complex. Alumbrera therefore functions as more than a production restart. It could serve as the first stage of a broader Argentine copper growth strategy.
Four-Year Programme Provides Room for Staged Development
The planned restart timeline gives Glencore several years to complete the necessary work before the targeted 2028 first production date. During that period, the company can progressively inspect and refurbish existing facilities, confirm resource assumptions, place orders for long-lead equipment and prepare the operation for renewed production.
A staged approach can help identify technical problems before they become major construction or commissioning delays. At the same time, the longer schedule exposes the project to external risks, including inflation, labour and contractor shortages, equipment availability and unexpected deterioration of historical infrastructure. The final cost and schedule will depend heavily on what Glencore finds as refurbishment progresses.
Alumbrera Could Arrive as Copper Supply Tightens
The timing of the restart could also prove significant for the global copper market. First production is targeted for 2028, a period when potential structural supply deficits are expected to become increasingly important as demand from electrification, renewable energy, power infrastructure and other industrial applications grows.
A project capable of returning to production using existing infrastructure could have a competitive advantage over greenfield developments that require billions of dollars of new processing and infrastructure investment. Alumbrera’s combination of established infrastructure, copper production and substantial gold output could therefore make it one of Argentina’s more competitive near-term sources of new copper supply.
