China’s Ganfeng Lithium has strengthened its position in Argentina’s lithium sector after completing a $180 million (€153 million) investment in Lithium Argentina, providing the Canadian-listed producer with additional financial capacity while increasing Ganfeng’s potential ownership stake. The investment also reinforces the Chinese company’s involvement in two major Argentine lithium development areas, Cauchari-Olaroz in Jujuy and Pozuelos-Pastos Grandes in Salta.
Convertible Financing Expands Ganfeng’s Potential Stake
Ganfeng’s investment is structured as a six-year unsecured convertible note carrying an annual interest rate of 4%. The note can be converted into Lithium Argentina shares at $12.50 per share, potentially giving Ganfeng an additional 14.4 million shares. Ganfeng currently holds approximately 9.6% of Lithium Argentina. If the convertible note is fully converted, its ownership would rise to approximately 16.1% on a diluted basis. The transaction builds on the existing relationship between the two companies through the Cauchari-Olaroz lithium operation and the Pozuelos-Pastos Grandes development.
Financing Supports Debt Repayment
Lithium Argentina plans to combine the new investment proceeds with cash already on its balance sheet to repay $259 million of convertible notes due. Replacing that upcoming obligation with financing carrying a longer maturity reduces the company’s immediate refinancing requirements and provides greater financial flexibility. The stronger balance sheet could also give management additional room to assess the next stage of development at Cauchari-Olaroz, where future expansion remains an important part of the company’s growth strategy.
Pozuelos-Pastos Grandes Moves Toward Joint Venture
The two companies are also consolidating their interests in Pozuelos-Pastos Grandes, commonly referred to as PPG, through a joint venture expected to close by the end of September. Development is expected to be approached in phases as the partners weigh long-term lithium demand against the price volatility that has affected the market since prices reached earlier peaks. The structure allows the companies to coordinate development of the Argentine resource while managing the substantial capital requirements associated with expanding lithium production.
Argentine Lithium Has Strategic Importance for Europe
The investment also has implications for European battery and automotive supply chains. Additional lithium production from Argentina could potentially supply European cathode, battery and electric-vehicle manufacturing facilities, helping diversify the sources of raw materials available to the continent’s industrial base.
Ganfeng’s growing ownership position also means future Argentine lithium production could remain commercially connected to Chinese refining and battery supply networks, unless European buyers establish binding offtake arrangements. The development illustrates the broader challenge facing Western markets as they seek to diversify lithium supply while Chinese companies continue to expand their positions in major producing regions.
Financing Avoids Immediate Equity Dilution
For Lithium Argentina, the $180 million transaction provides additional liquidity without requiring an immediate public share issuance. The company can use the proceeds alongside existing cash to address its near-term debt maturity while maintaining flexibility around its development plans.
For Ganfeng, the convertible structure provides a defined path to increase its ownership stake without acquiring all of the additional shares immediately. If conversion occurs, the Chinese lithium producer would have a significantly larger position in Lithium Argentina and greater exposure to the company’s Argentine assets.
Growing Chinese Influence in Argentina’s Lithium Sector
Lithium Argentina’s shares trade on the Toronto Stock Exchange and New York Stock Exchange under the LAR ticker, with Canadian regulatory disclosures available through SEDAR+ and US filings through the Securities and Exchange Commission. Ganfeng is listed in mainland China under Shenzhen ticker 002460 and in Hong Kong under ticker 1772.
The latest financing strengthens the financial position of Lithium Argentina while giving Ganfeng a clear mechanism to expand its ownership in the company. The transaction therefore combines near-term debt management with a longer-term strategic shift in ownership, further connecting Argentina’s growing lithium production base with China’s established position across global refining and battery supply chains.
