From Feasibility Studies to Construction Sites: Which Mining Projects Are Making Real Progress?

The mining industry generates a constant stream of announcements, from exploration results and resource estimates to feasibility studies and permitting updates. While these developments often attract investor attention, not all project milestones carry the same weight. The real challenge is identifying which companies are genuinely advancing toward production and which are still primarily building a narrative around future potential.

In today’s increasingly selective capital markets, investors are placing greater emphasis on tangible progress. Exploration success can expand a project’s potential, and resource updates can demonstrate scale, but the milestones that truly matter are those that reduce development risk and move a project closer to becoming an operating mine. Permits, financing agreements, construction approvals, engineering programs, procurement activities, and physical site work are the indicators that separate development stories from production-ready assets.

Understanding What Real Project Advancement Looks Like

Mining projects typically follow a well-defined development pathway. Early-stage exploration aims to identify mineralization and establish resource potential. Resource estimates help define the size and quality of a deposit. Preliminary economic assessments and pre-feasibility studies provide an initial understanding of project economics, while feasibility studies refine development plans and investment requirements.

Many projects never move beyond these stages. The critical transition occurs when companies begin reducing specific risks that stand between a deposit and commercial production. Regulatory approvals lower permitting uncertainty. Engineering programs improve construction planning. Financing commitments secure the capital needed for development. Construction decisions demonstrate management confidence and commitment. These are the milestones that often create the greatest value.

Copperstone Gold Project Advances Toward Construction

One of the strongest recent examples of a mining project moving beyond the study phase is the Copperstone Gold Project in Arizona, developed by Minera Alamos.

The company recently released a positive pre-feasibility study and announced that its board had approved a fast-track construction strategy, signaling a major shift from planning to execution.

The study outlined robust economics, including:

  • After-tax NPV (5%) of US$374 million
  • After-tax IRR of 108%
  • Payback period of approximately 1.2 years
  • Initial capital expenditure of US$58.3 million
  • Base-case gold price assumption of US$3,500 per ounce

Importantly, the project is expected to enter production by mid-2027. While strong economic metrics are encouraging, the board’s decision to proceed with construction planning is arguably the more significant milestone. It demonstrates confidence in the project’s viability and marks a clear step toward becoming an operating gold mine.

Soma Gold Delivers Operational Progress

Not all meaningful project advancements involve large-scale construction programs. In Colombia, Soma Gold is demonstrating how smaller operational milestones can also create value.

The company recently received its final explosives permit for the Aurora Mine, allowing mining activities and ore shipments to commence immediately. At the same time, operations have restarted at the historic El Limon Mine, with mineralized material already being transported to the processing facility at the El Bagre Gold Complex. Although these developments are relatively modest compared to large greenfield projects, they carry significant operational importance. By adding new sources of mill feed to existing processing infrastructure, Soma is improving utilization rates and generating a more immediate pathway to production growth without requiring major capital investments.

Goldboro Moves Closer to Development Readiness

Another project showing substantial progress is the Goldboro Project in Nova Scotia, owned by NexGold.

While the company has not yet reached a final construction decision, it has successfully secured a comprehensive package of provincial and federal approvals, placing the project in a much stronger position than many development-stage peers.

The permits obtained include:

  • Environmental assessment approval
  • Mineral lease authorization
  • Crown land approvals
  • Industrial Approval
  • Fisheries Act Authorization

Obtaining these approvals significantly reduces regulatory uncertainty and demonstrates that the project has advanced beyond preliminary planning stages. NexGold expects to release an updated feasibility study by the end of the third quarter of 2026, which is expected to serve as the foundation for future development decisions and financing discussions.

For investors, this combination of permitting success and technical advancement represents meaningful progress toward construction readiness.

Collective Mining Advances Development at Guayabales

In Colombia, Collective Mining’s Guayabales Project remains at an earlier stage of development, but recent achievements suggest the company is actively laying the groundwork for future project advancement. One of the most important initiatives is the development of an exploration adit designed to support underground access and technical evaluation.

The adit is expected to provide several important benefits:

  • Underground drilling access
  • Geotechnical analysis
  • Hydrological data collection
  • Bulk metallurgical sampling
  • Improved project design information

The company has also reported progress in detailed engineering, permitting activities, and the completion and approval of an explosives storage facility. While Guayabales remains an exploration-focused asset, these developments represent practical steps toward reducing technical uncertainty and supporting future development decisions.

P2 Gold Strengthens Feasibility Path at Gabbs

In Nevada, P2 Gold’s Gabbs Project is advancing through technical work aimed at supporting a future feasibility study. Recent geotechnical drilling at the Sullivan zone successfully intersected gold-copper mineralization in all reported diamond drill holes, providing valuable geological information for future mine planning. The company intends to complete additional drilling programs that will contribute to an updated mineral resource estimate, forming the basis of a planned feasibility study expected in the fourth quarter of 2026. Although Gabbs has not yet reached the construction phase, the ongoing technical work is helping reduce geological uncertainty and improve confidence in future development plans.

Why Risk Reduction Matters More Than Headlines

One of the most important lessons for mining investors is that not all project announcements carry equal significance.

A high-grade drill intercept may generate excitement, but it does not necessarily bring a project closer to production. Similarly, resource growth can improve a project’s long-term potential without addressing the practical challenges associated with development.

The announcements that often create the greatest value are those that reduce identifiable risks.

For example:

  • Permits reduce regulatory risk
  • Grade-control drilling reduces mine-planning risk
  • Engineering programs reduce execution risk
  • Financing commitments reduce capital risk
  • Construction approvals reduce strategic uncertainty

Each milestone removes a specific obstacle standing between a project and commercial production.

Capital Markets Are Rewarding Execution

The current financing environment has become increasingly selective. Investors and lenders are showing greater preference for companies that can demonstrate measurable progress rather than relying solely on exploration success or resource expansion.

Projects that successfully move through permitting, engineering, financing, and construction planning stages are generally viewed as lower-risk opportunities than those still focused primarily on exploration. As competition for capital intensifies, developers capable of demonstrating real-world advancement will likely attract stronger investor support and financing opportunities.

The Projects That Stand Out Are Those Moving Toward Production

The distinction between project promotion and project advancement has never been more important. While exploration results, resource updates, and economic studies remain valuable components of the development process, the projects that truly stand out are those actively reducing risk and building momentum toward production.

Whether through construction approvals, permitting success, operational restarts, engineering progress, or financing readiness, the companies gaining attention in today’s mining market are those proving they can move beyond technical studies and turn mineral resources into producing assets. In an industry where many projects remain stuck in the evaluation phase for years, tangible progress has become one of the most valuable indicators of future success.
