Germany is not traditionally considered one of Europe’s major mining stock markets compared with global centres such as London or Warsaw. However, the country’s Frankfurt, Xetra and Tradegate platforms are becoming increasingly relevant for investors seeking exposure to critical minerals, advanced processing technologies and strategic raw-material projects.

Unlike traditional mining exchanges dominated by large producers, Germany’s resource market is focused on companies that support Europe’s industrial transformation. Recent developments involving Almonty Industries and Vulcan Energy Resources highlight two of the most important themes shaping the sector: tungsten supply security and lithium production linked to renewable energy and electric-vehicle manufacturing. One company represents the revival of a strategic industrial metal supply chain. The other aims to combine lithium extraction, geothermal energy and low-carbon chemical processing into a new European resource model.

Almonty Advances Tungsten Project as Western Supply Security Gains Importance

Almonty Industries has emerged as one of the most significant critical-minerals stories available to European investors. The company recently reached a major milestone by beginning processing operations at the Sangdong tungsten mine in South Korea, moving the project from development toward commercial production.

The start of processing marks the transition from a construction and development phase into the production of saleable tungsten concentrate. Initial plant operations are being supplied from an approximately 139,700-tonne run-of-mine ore stockpile, providing material for early production activities.

The importance of Sangdong extends far beyond the mine’s geographic location. Tungsten is considered one of the most strategically important industrial metals because of its applications in:

The company is developing the Lionheart lithium and geothermal energy project in Germany’s Upper Rhine Valley, combining lithium extraction with renewable energy generation.

The project aims to produce approximately 24,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide monohydrate annually, a volume that could support battery production for around 500,000 electric vehicles. Unlike conventional lithium operations based on hard-rock mining or large evaporation ponds, Vulcan’s approach is built around geothermal brine extraction and direct lithium extraction (DLE) technology.

The company’s model combines:

  • Low-carbon heat generation
  • Domestic battery-material supply

This approach fits closely with Europe’s goal of developing a more secure and sustainable lithium supply chain for electric vehicles and energy storage systems.

Germany Supports Domestic Lithium Development as Construction Progresses

Recent project developments indicate that Vulcan’s lithium strategy is moving closer to industrial implementation. The state of Rhineland-Palatinate granted a royalty exemption for lithium production, improving the project’s economic framework. At the same time, major construction activities began at the company’s central lithium chemical facility located at Infraserv Industrial Park Höchst in Frankfurt.

These developments strengthen Vulcan’s position as one of Europe’s most closely watched lithium projects. The project also faces a more complex technical profile than conventional mining operations. Instead of simply extracting and shipping mineral concentrate, Vulcan must successfully integrate several technically demanding systems:

  • Underground brine production
  • Direct lithium extraction technology

Germany’s mining investment landscape remains relatively small, but its importance is growing as Europe focuses on reducing dependence on external suppliers of strategic materials. Almonty Industries provides exposure to tungsten processing and Western supply-chain diversification at a time when industrial and defence applications are increasing demand for secure sources of critical metals.

Vulcan Energy Resources represents a new generation of European resource projects combining lithium production, renewable energy and low-carbon industrial processing. The significance of Frankfurt, Xetra and Tradegate is therefore not based on the number of listed mining companies. Instead, these markets are becoming access points for investors seeking exposure to companies connected with Europe’s broader industrial-security strategy. As governments accelerate efforts to secure supplies of critical raw materials, Germany’s resource market is increasingly focused not on traditional mining alone, but on the technologies and processing capabilities needed to build the next generation of European industry.
