Fortune Minerals has completed validation testing for an upgraded hydrometallurgical process flowsheet designed to produce battery-grade cobalt sulphate heptahydrate from its NICO cobalt-gold-bismuth-copper project in Canada.
The latest metallurgical programme confirms that the project can produce a high-quality cobalt sulphate product while improving metal recovery rates through a simplified processing approach aimed at reducing potential capital and operating cost pressures.
The results represent an important milestone for NICO as the company advances one of Canada’s most significant critical minerals projects, where the ability to transform mined material into battery-ready products is central to the overall investment case.
NICO Designed as an Integrated Critical Minerals Development
Unlike traditional mining projects focused primarily on extracting and selling concentrates, NICO is being developed as a vertically integrated operation. The project includes a planned mine and concentrator in Canada’s Northwest Territories, combined with a dedicated hydrometallurgical processing facility in Alberta. This integrated structure is intended to allow Fortune Minerals to move beyond mineral extraction and participate further along the critical minerals value chain.
The project’s commercial potential depends heavily on its ability to process concentrates into higher-value products, including battery-grade cobalt sulphate, bismuth ingots and copper cement. This processing capability transforms NICO from a conventional mineral deposit into a potential North American supply chain platform supporting demand for battery materials and strategic industrial metals.
Metallurgical Results Show Improved Recovery Performance
The latest test work delivered encouraging technical results, demonstrating strong recovery rates across several valuable commodities contained within the deposit. Fortune Minerals reported cobalt extraction of 97% and copper extraction of 74% at the project’s design feed grade. These results compare favourably with the company’s earlier 2008 pilot plant testing, which achieved 95% cobalt recovery and 70% copper recovery.
Recent testing also showed gold recoveries between 97% and 98%, improving on the previous pilot programme result of approximately 95%. In addition to cobalt and copper production potential, the NICO project includes a significant gold component, with more than one million ounces of in-situ gold identified as a valuable co-product that could provide additional economic support during commodity market cycles.
Processing Capacity Becomes Critical Minerals’ Biggest Challenge
The progress at NICO highlights a broader issue affecting the development of critical mineral supply chains across North America. While securing mineral resources remains essential, the most difficult challenge increasingly lies in the midstream processing sector — including refining, separation technology, product qualification and responsible management of processing residues.
A deposit alone does not guarantee supply security. Critical minerals must be converted into consistent, high-quality products that meet the strict requirements of battery manufacturers and industrial customers. For cobalt specifically, the ability to produce battery-grade cobalt sulphate domestically is strategically important as governments and companies seek to reduce reliance on concentrated global refining networks.

Following the successful validation work, Fortune Minerals must now convert the technical results into updated project studies, financing discussions and regulatory progress.
