Finland has officially inaugurated what is being described as Europe’s first lithium mine dedicated to battery-grade production, marking a historic milestone in the continent’s strategy to strengthen its critical raw materials supply chain. The project, led by Keliber, has commenced lithium extraction in the Kaustinen region of western Finland, positioning the country at the forefront of Europe’s rapidly expanding battery industry.
The mining area extends across the municipalities of Kaustinen, Kokkola, and Kronoby and is designed to supply high-purity lithium compounds used in lithium-ion batteries. These batteries are essential for electric vehicles (EVs), energy storage systems, and advanced tech applications powering the global energy transition.
A Strategic Step Toward European Lithium Independence
For years, Europe has depended heavily on imported lithium and other raw materials such as nickel and copper to support its electrification goals. With demand surging due to decarbonization policies and the rapid growth of the EV market, securing domestic sources of lithium has become a strategic priority.
Keliber’s project represents the first commercial-scale battery-grade lithium production operation in Europe, significantly reducing reliance on overseas suppliers. Extracted ore will be processed into battery-grade lithium hydroxide, a key material in next-generation battery manufacturing. By localizing extraction and refining, Europe shortens supply chains, lowers transport emissions, and enhances supply security.

This project strengthens the emerging European battery value chain, creating a foundation for downstream investments in refining, cathode production, and cell manufacturing.
