Ferrexpo has restarted iron ore pellet production in Ukraine after raising about €86 million, while increasing its focus on European steelmakers as disruptions to Black Sea shipping continue to affect export logistics. The London-listed mining company has resumed production on one pelletiser line, marking a partial recovery of operations after repeated disruptions to infrastructure, electricity supplies and transport caused by the war in Ukraine.
The restart gives Ferrexpo an opportunity to rebuild production volumes while adapting its sales strategy to changing export conditions. The company is expected to direct a larger proportion of its output toward European markets, where alternative transport routes provide greater flexibility than Black Sea shipping.
Ferrexpo Targets European Steelmakers
Ongoing attacks affecting Black Sea ports and shipping have strengthened Ferrexpo’s focus on customers in Europe. Rail connections and routes linked to the Danube offer alternative channels for moving iron ore products to European buyers despite continued constraints on maritime logistics.
The shift also increases the strategic relevance of Ferrexpo’s high-grade iron ore pellets for European steel producers. Higher-grade feedstock can help reduce coke consumption and emissions compared with lower-grade blast furnace materials, making premium pellets increasingly important as steelmakers invest in lower-carbon production technologies. For European steelmakers, the availability of high-grade pellets from a relatively nearby producer provides an additional source of raw material at a time when the industry is seeking to improve the efficiency and emissions performance of steel production.
€86 Million Capital Raise Supports Restart
Ferrexpo’s production restart follows a capital raising of approximately €86 million, strengthening liquidity available for operations and working capital.
The funding is corporate financing, rather than financial support from the European Union or European institutional programmes. The additional liquidity provides the company with resources to support its operations as it works to restore production under difficult operating and logistical conditions. The pace at which Ferrexpo can increase output will depend on several factors, particularly the reliability of electricity supplies, railway capacity and Ukrainian transport infrastructure.
European Supply Gains Importance
The renewed production comes as European steelmakers seek greater access to higher-grade iron ore feedstock that can support decarbonisation efforts and improve the efficiency of steelmaking. Ferrexpo’s proximity to European markets and access to rail and Danube transport routes could therefore become increasingly important while Black Sea export conditions remain uncertain.
The company’s ability to restore larger production volumes will ultimately remain linked to the security and reliability of Ukraine’s infrastructure. For European buyers, however, the restart provides an additional source of premium iron ore pellets and reduces reliance on longer-distance seaborne supply.
