Europe’s discussion about critical raw materials is often dominated by lithium, copper, graphite and rare earth elements, but several smaller commodity markets could prove just as important to the continent’s industrial future.
Metals such as tin, magnesium, fluorspar and tungsten support industries ranging from electronics and defense to chemical manufacturing, aluminium production and advanced engineering. Although these markets are relatively small compared with copper or lithium, disruptions in supply can have an outsized impact on Europe’s manufacturing base. As governments seek to strengthen domestic supply chains and reduce dependence on imports, these overlooked materials are attracting growing strategic attention.
Tin Remains Essential to the Modern Electronics Industry
Among Europe’s lesser-known critical minerals, tin stands out because of its indispensable role in electronics manufacturing.
Tin is the primary component used in solder, making it essential for:
- Printed circuit boards
- Consumer electronics
- Electric vehicles
- Renewable energy systems
- Data centers
- Telecommunications infrastructure
Without reliable tin supplies, modern electronic manufacturing would become significantly more difficult. One of Europe’s most important emerging tin developments is Elementos’ Oropesa project in Spain. The project recently gained additional momentum after receiving “Overriding Public Interest” status from the Andalusian regional government, a designation that may help advance the permitting process. Current project estimates indicate that Oropesa could produce approximately 3,400 tonnes of tin annually over an expected 12-year mine life, potentially supplying up to 10% of European tin demand.
Small Production Can Generate Significant Economic Value
The tin market demonstrates how relatively modest production volumes can still create substantial economic potential. Based on the London Metal Exchange (LME) cash settlement price of approximately US$51,000 per tonne on 29 June 2026, annual production of 3,400 tonnes represents a gross contained metal value of roughly US$173 million per year before accounting for mining recoveries, processing costs, royalties, taxes, financing expenses and commercial adjustments.
While this does not represent projected project revenue, it illustrates why relatively small mining operations can generate meaningful financial value in high-priced specialty metals. Unlike bulk commodities, niche metals often derive strategic importance from scarcity rather than production volume.
Magnesium Is a Critical Weakness in Europe’s Supply Chain
Another overlooked strategic material is magnesium, which plays a vital role in manufacturing lightweight aluminium alloys.
These alloys are widely used in:
- Automotive production
- Aerospace components
- Industrial equipment
- Packaging materials
Europe currently relies heavily on imported magnesium, with China remaining the dominant global supplier. This dependence has increased interest in potential domestic production projects. One example is Verde Magnesium’s proposed development in Romania.
Although privately owned, the project has attracted attention because it combines mining and downstream processing in a development reportedly valued at around US$1 billion. If completed, the operation could produce up to 90,000 tonnes of magnesium annually, equivalent to roughly half of current European Union demand, significantly improving regional supply security.
Fluorspar and Tungsten Support Multiple Strategic Industries
Fluorspar and tungsten are equally important despite receiving far less public attention than battery metals.
Fluorspar serves as the primary raw material for producing hydrofluoric acid, which is essential in:
- Chemical manufacturing
- Aluminium production
- Refrigerants
- Battery-related materials
- Industrial processing
Tungsten, meanwhile, remains indispensable for:
- Hard metals
- Industrial cutting tools
- Aerospace engineering
- Defense manufacturing
- High-performance industrial equipment
Although these commodities represent relatively small global markets, interruptions in supply can quickly affect strategic manufacturing sectors.
Smaller Markets Bring Different Investment Risks
For investors, specialty metals offer opportunities that differ significantly from larger commodity markets. As governments expand critical minerals policies, niche commodities can experience rapid valuation gains when supply security becomes a political priority. These markets also present unique challenges.

- Specialized offtake requirements

Unlike major metals such as copper or iron ore, specialty mineral projects often depend on a relatively small number of industrial buyers.

The investment case for smaller critical minerals should not be measured by the size of their global markets alone. Instead, the key question is whether Europe possesses sufficient domestic production to protect strategic industries. A mine producing 3,400 tonnes of tin annually can have considerable significance if regional supply remains extremely limited.
Likewise, a 90,000-tonne magnesium operation could dramatically reduce dependence on imported material. Similarly, renewed domestic production of tungsten could strengthen Europe’s defense and advanced manufacturing sectors at a time of growing geopolitical uncertainty. Strategic relevance increasingly outweighs simple production volume.
Europe’s Critical Minerals Strategy Is Becoming More Diverse
Europe’s effort to strengthen raw material security is expanding well beyond lithium and battery metals. Governments and investors are increasingly recognizing that long-term industrial resilience depends on securing a broad portfolio of essential materials supporting electronics, transportation, renewable energy, defense and advanced manufacturing.
For mining companies, success will depend not only on discovering valuable deposits but also on securing permits, attracting financing, establishing customer partnerships and building commercially viable operations. The companies that successfully transform the strategic importance of tin, magnesium, fluorspar and tungsten into operating mines and processing facilities are likely to become some of the most valuable participants in Europe’s evolving critical minerals supply chain.
