Europe’s Mining Revival: Top 10 Strategic Projects Driving Critical Minerals Security and Industrial Growth

As the European Union accelerates efforts to reduce dependence on imported critical raw materials, a new generation of mining projects is being revived, expanded, and fast-tracked across the continent. The implementation of the EU Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA) has placed domestic resource development at the center of Europe’s industrial strategy, with ambitious goals to secure at least 10% of strategic mineral demand through domestic extraction by 2030.

From copper, zinc, lithium, nickel, graphite, rare earths, and antimony to iron ore, Europe is witnessing a resurgence of projects that were once dormant, delayed, or operating below capacity. These developments are expected to strengthen supply chains for clean energy technologies, electric vehicles, defense systems, and advanced manufacturing.

1. Gediktepe Copper-Gold Mine, Turkey

Transformation into a Major Base Metals Producer

The Gediktepe Mine, operated by ACG Metals, is undergoing a significant transformation. Historically known for producing gold and silver from oxide ore, the operation is now transitioning toward the extraction and processing of copper, zinc, and lead sulphide ores.

The expansion strategy includes the processing of stockpiled materials to generate near-term revenue while preparing for long-term polymetallic production. As demand for critical industrial metals continues to grow, Gediktepe is positioning itself as a key supplier to regional and international markets.

2. Lac des Iles Graphite Project

Supporting Europe’s Battery Supply Chain

Although located in Canada, the Lac des Iles (LDI) Graphite Project plays a crucial role in Europe’s battery ecosystem. Operated by Northern Graphite, the mine is advancing toward full operational readiness following extensive maintenance and infrastructure upgrades.

Open-pit expansion activities are expected to resume after final permit approvals, boosting production of high-quality graphite flakes essential for electric vehicle batteries and energy storage systems. As Europe seeks secure sources of battery minerals, projects like LDI are becoming increasingly important to the continent’s industrial strategy.

3. Lojane Antimony Project, North Macedonia

Reviving a Strategic Defense Mineral Asset

The dormant Lojane Antimony and Chromium Project is moving toward reactivation amid surging global demand for antimony, a critical mineral used in defense, aerospace, semiconductors, and flame-retardant technologies.

Owned by Pela Global Limited, the project has attracted international attention, including financial backing aimed at reducing global dependence on Chinese antimony supplies. The restart could establish North Macedonia as a strategically important supplier within the European critical minerals landscape.

4. Kiruna Iron Ore Mine, Sweden

Strengthening Europe’s Iron Ore Production

Sweden’s legendary Kiruna Mine, operated by LKAB, remains one of the world’s most important iron ore assets. The company is currently implementing maintenance programs and operational adjustments to optimize underground mining activities.

Infrastructure upgrades and process improvements are expected to restore full production capacity, ensuring continued supply of high-quality iron ore pellets to European steelmakers. Kiruna remains central to Europe’s ambitions for sustainable steel production and industrial independence.

5. Caremag Rare Earth Processing Facility, France

Building Europe’s Rare Earth Independence

Located in Lacq, France, the Caremag facility is preparing for commercial production of high-purity rare earth oxides following extensive modernization work.

The plant will process both mined rare earth concentrates and recycled permanent magnets, helping Europe establish a domestic supply chain for materials used in electric vehicles, wind turbines, electronics, and advanced defense systems. As concerns grow over global rare earth supply concentration, Caremag is emerging as a cornerstone of Europe’s strategic autonomy efforts.

6. BAM4EVER Synthetic Graphite Project, France

Expanding Battery Material Manufacturing Capacity

France is also advancing its battery material ambitions through the BAM4EVER synthetic graphite initiative, supported by Tokai COBEX Savoie.

The project involves the reactivation and expansion of manufacturing lines dedicated to producing synthetic graphite used in lithium-ion battery anodes. As Europe builds gigafactories and scales EV production, secure access to graphite remains essential for long-term competitiveness.

7. Gallicam Nickel-Cobalt Refinery, France

Modernizing for the EV Revolution

The Gallicam refinery in Sandouville is undergoing a major modernization program led by Sibanye-Stillwater.

The facility is being redesigned to produce precursor cathode active materials used in electric vehicle batteries. Once operational, the refinery will strengthen Europe’s domestic supply of nickel and cobalt, reducing dependence on imported battery materials while supporting the continent’s rapidly expanding EV industry.

8. Aznalcóllar Mine, Spain

A Historic Mine Returns with Environmental Upgrades

One of Europe’s most closely watched restart projects is Spain’s Aznalcóllar Mine, located near Seville.

The former zinc, copper, and lead operation is being redeveloped through a €50 million investment program led by Minera Los Frailes, a consortium involving Grupo México and Magtel.

A major focus of the restart is the implementation of advanced water treatment and environmental management systems, reflecting lessons learned from past environmental incidents. The project is expected to become an important source of base metals for European industry while adhering to modern sustainability standards.

9. Zinnwald Lithium Project, Germany

Germany’s Push for Domestic Lithium Production

The Zinnwald Lithium Project in Saxony is emerging as one of Europe’s most advanced lithium developments.

Owned by Zinnwald Lithium, the project aims to establish an integrated mining and refining operation capable of supplying battery-grade lithium to Germany’s automotive and battery manufacturing sectors.

With Europe seeking to secure critical inputs for electric vehicles, Zinnwald is viewed as a strategically significant project that could help reduce dependence on overseas lithium suppliers.

10. Almasjafäll Rare Earth and Tellurium Projects, Scandinavia

Accelerating Critical Minerals Development

Across Scandinavia, several rare earth, tellurium, tungsten, and other critical mineral projects are benefiting from accelerated permitting under the EU’s Strategic Projects framework.

The Almasjafäll region forms part of a broader Nordic effort to revive brownfield mining districts and develop new sources of minerals essential for renewable energy technologies and advanced electronics.

Supported by major industry players such as Boliden and LKAB, these projects could become key contributors to Europe’s future critical minerals supply chain.

Europe’s Mining Renaissance Gains Momentum

Europe’s drive toward strategic resource independence is reshaping the mining sector. The revival of projects focused on copper, zinc, nickel, lithium, graphite, rare earth elements, antimony, and iron ore demonstrates the growing urgency of securing domestic sources of critical raw materials.

While challenges related to permitting, financing, environmental compliance, and community engagement remain, the momentum behind these projects highlights a broader transformation. As global competition for critical minerals intensifies, Europe is increasingly turning to its own geological resources to support industrial growth, clean energy deployment, and long-term economic resilience.
