Europe is accelerating its push to secure domestic and allied supplies of critical minerals, but exploration across the continent is revealing a fundamental truth: the biggest challenge is not only geological. It is also regulatory, social, financial, and strategic.

One of the most notable European exploration developments comes from Group Eleven Resources and its Ballywire discovery in Ireland. Recent drilling at the PG West project returned high-grade copper, silver, and antimony intersections, including:

  • 6.6 metres grading 83 g/t silver, 1.60% copper, and 0.19% antimony
  • 2.8 metres grading 110 g/t silver, 5.09% copper, and 0.44% antimony
  • Including a high-grade section of 0.6 metres grading 506 g/t silver, 23.60% copper, and 2.04% antimony

The company reports that deeper copper-silver mineralization has now been intersected across multiple drill sections, reinforcing the scale potential of the system.

Why Antimony Matters in Europe

While lithium and rare earths often dominate critical-minerals discussions, antimony plays a strategically important but less visible role. It is used in:

  • Defense applications
  • Flame retardants
  • Industrial manufacturing processes

A European discovery containing copper, silver, zinc, lead, and antimony therefore carries significance beyond traditional base-metals exploration, potentially aligning with broader security and industrial supply concerns.

United Kingdom: Cornish Tin & Lithium Expands Dual-Metal System

In the United Kingdom, Cornish Tin & Lithium is advancing exploration at its Tregonning project, highlighting the revival of historic mining districts using modern techniques. Phase 3 drilling confirmed that the lithium-bearing Newall Formation extends approximately 3.27 kilometres between Tregonning North and South.

Key results include:

  • 0.3 metres grading 1.33% Li₂O, with a peak of 1.42% Li₂O
  • Discovery of a new tin system at Tregonning South
  • Identification of ten tin lodes with grades reaching 2.69% tin

This dual-metal system reflects a growing European trend: combining lithium for batteries with tin for electronics and solder production within historically mined regions.

The central challenge remains whether these encouraging intercepts can be expanded into a resource large enough to support commercial development.

Sweden: Uranium Policy Shift Unlocks New Exploration Potential

In Sweden, Aura Energy’s Häggån project demonstrates how regulatory change can be just as powerful as geological discovery. On June 11, 2026, the Swedish Parliament voted to amend the Nuclear Activities Act, removing uranium mining from the definition of nuclear facility regulation. This reform eliminates the requirement for explicit municipal approval and is expected to take effect on July 15, 2026. Aura Energy reports that the Häggån project contains approximately 800 million pounds of uranium, significantly strengthening its development outlook.

Earlier in 2026, Sweden also lifted its ban on uranium exploration and mining, marking a major policy reversal. Unlike a traditional drill result, this represents a regulatory catalyst, effectively unlocking previously stranded geological resources and potentially transforming project economics.

Balkans: Terra Balcanica Expands Polymetallic Exploration in Bosnia

In the Balkans, Terra Balcanica Resources has secured a 49.06 square kilometre exploration licence in Bosnia-Herzegovina’s historic Srebrenica mining district.

The licence covers a polymetallic system rich in:

  • Zinc

  • Associated precious and base metals

The permit is valid for three years, with two potential two-year extensions, providing up to seven years of continuous exploration access.

West Africa Link: European Capital Reaches Global Projects

Although focused on Côte d’Ivoire, Switch Metals illustrates how European capital markets are influencing global critical-minerals exploration. The AIM-listed company has launched a maiden drilling program at its Issia project, targeting approximately 2,500 metres of drilling across the Zraty and Kabore prospects.

Highlights include:

  • Surface samples at Zraty reaching up to 1,230 ppm Ta₂O₅
  • Kabore showing a 1.3-kilometre lithium pathfinder anomaly
  • Spodumene mineralization grading up to 2.8% Li₂O

This reflects a broader pattern where European-listed companies pursue strategic minerals internationally to support long-term supply chain objectives.

Europe’s Exploration Landscape: Multiple Markets, One Challenge

The emerging picture across Europe is not a single exploration boom, but a collection of distinct regional opportunities:
