Endomines Oy has secured significant financial support from both European Union and Finnish regional development programs as it moves forward with plans to strengthen its position in the critical minerals sector. The company has been awarded a business development subsidy of up to EUR 1.51 million by the Economic Development Centre of Eastern Finland for its flagship initiative, “Endomines – Producer of Critical Minerals.”
The funding package represents an important milestone for the Finnish mining company and reflects growing European efforts to secure reliable domestic sources of strategic raw materials essential for industrial development, advanced manufacturing, and economic resilience. Of the total funding, approximately EUR 960,000 has been allocated to development activities, while around EUR 550,000 will support investment-related initiatives aimed at advancing the project over the coming years.
EU-Backed Initiative Supports Innovation and Advanced Technologies
The project is being financed through the European Union’s “Renewing and Competent Finland 2021–2027” regional and structural policy program, a funding framework designed to enhance innovation capabilities, strengthen research activities, and accelerate the adoption of advanced technologies across key industries.
By supporting projects that contribute to technological advancement and industrial competitiveness, the program plays a central role in Europe’s broader strategy to reduce dependence on imported critical minerals while encouraging sustainable resource development within the region.
For Endomines, the funding provides an opportunity to deepen its understanding of mineral resources that are becoming increasingly important to European supply chains and industrial policy objectives.
Focus on Tungsten and Molybdenum Resource Development
A central objective of the project is to evaluate the economic viability and operational feasibility of future tungsten and molybdenum mining activities in Finland.
Both minerals are considered strategically important for modern industry. Tungsten is widely used in manufacturing, defense technologies, mining equipment, cutting tools, and high-performance industrial applications due to its exceptional hardness and heat resistance. Molybdenum, meanwhile, plays a critical role in steel production, alloys, energy infrastructure, and a variety of industrial processes that require enhanced strength and corrosion resistance. The project will generate valuable technical and scientific data that will help determine the long-term potential for responsible extraction and production of these minerals within Finland.
Comprehensive Research Program Planned
The initiative encompasses a broad range of geological, environmental, and metallurgical studies designed to provide a detailed understanding of the project’s resource base and development opportunities.
Key activities will include:
- Analysis of tungsten and molybdenum drill core samples
- Extensive till sampling programs
- Mineral beneficiation and processing tests
- Environmental characterization of mining waste materials
- Detailed mineralogical assessments
- Process engineering and plant design studies
These investigations are intended to create a comprehensive technical foundation for future decision-making while ensuring that any potential mining operations are evaluated according to modern environmental and operational standards. The emphasis on environmental characterization reflects the growing importance of sustainable mining practices within Europe, where regulators, investors, and communities increasingly expect resource projects to demonstrate strong environmental performance from the earliest stages of development.
Strengthening Long-Term Competitiveness
According to the Economic Development Centre of Eastern Finland, the project is expected to significantly enhance Endomines’ long-term competitiveness and support the future growth of the company’s operations.
By investing in research, technology, and resource evaluation, Endomines aims to position itself within the rapidly expanding market for critical minerals, a sector receiving increasing attention from governments and industry leaders across Europe. The initiative also aligns with broader European efforts to secure domestic supplies of strategic raw materials amid growing concerns over global supply chain vulnerabilities and geopolitical risks affecting mineral markets.
As demand for critical minerals continues to rise, companies capable of developing reliable and sustainable sources of supply are expected to play an increasingly important role in supporting Europe’s industrial transformation.
Project to Run Through 2028
The project will be carried out in Ilomantsi, Finland, with activities scheduled to begin in June 2025 and continue through April 2028. This multi-year timeline reflects the extensive technical, geological, and environmental work required to accurately assess the commercial potential of tungsten and molybdenum resources. The studies are expected to generate valuable information that could influence future investment decisions and potential mine development opportunities.
Endomines CEO Highlights Strategic Importance
Commenting on the funding award, Endomines Chief Executive Officer Kari Vyhtinen described the subsidy as a major step forward in executing the company’s long-term strategy.
According to Vyhtinen, critical minerals such as tungsten are becoming increasingly important for Europe’s self-sufficiency objectives, while molybdenum remains a vital industrial raw material used across numerous manufacturing sectors. He emphasized that the project will strengthen Endomines’ ability to evaluate and potentially develop the responsible production of these strategic minerals in Finland, supporting both national and European goals related to resource security and sustainable industrial development.
Growing Importance of Critical Minerals in Europe
The funding awarded to Endomines comes at a time when European policymakers are intensifying efforts to secure access to critical raw materials needed for industrial competitiveness, energy infrastructure, advanced manufacturing, and emerging technologies.
Projects focused on strategic minerals such as tungsten and molybdenum are increasingly viewed as essential components of Europe’s long-term economic and industrial resilience. By supporting research, innovation, and resource assessment initiatives, public funding programs are helping create the foundation for future domestic production and stronger regional supply chains.
For Endomines, the new funding not only advances a key corporate initiative but also positions the company to contribute to Europe’s broader ambitions of building a more secure, sustainable, and technologically advanced critical minerals sector.
