DEScycle Launches Teesside Critical Metals Recovery Plant to Advance Electronic Waste Recycling Technology

British metals-processing company DEScycle has entered a new stage of development after opening its first industrial demonstration facility at the Wilton Centre in Teesside, marking the first operational deployment of its distributed critical-metals recovery technology. The facility, which began operations on 12 July, represents a major milestone for the company as it moves its recycling platform from laboratory and pilot testing toward industrial validation.

The demonstration plant is designed to recover valuable metals from complex waste streams, including electronic waste, using a lower-temperature processing approach aimed at improving the efficiency and sustainability of critical mineral recovery.

DEScycle Technology Reaches Industrial Demonstration Stage

The Teesside facility operates at a 250-kilogram batch scale and is expected to process between 50 and 100 tonnes of material annually during the demonstration phase.

The commissioning of the plant moves DEScycle’s technology to Technology Readiness Level 7 (TRL 7), meaning the process is now being tested and demonstrated in a relevant industrial operating environment rather than remaining limited to laboratory experiments or small-scale pilot trials. The transition represents an important step toward commercial deployment, as industrial customers and investors typically require operational data before committing capital to large-scale facilities.

Electronic Waste to Supply Gold, Copper, Silver and Palladium

The initial feedstock for the Teesside demonstration plant will include printed circuit boards and complex electronic waste supplied through DEScycle’s UK joint venture partner, GAP Group.

DEScycle is also developing recovery processes targeting additional metals such as tin, iron and aluminium, expanding the potential value of future recycling operations. Electronic waste contains significant quantities of valuable metals, often at higher concentrations than many mined resources. Improving recovery technologies is becoming increasingly important as demand rises for metals used in electronics, renewable energy systems and advanced technologies.

Deep Eutectic Solvents Offer Alternative to Traditional Smelting

DEScycle’s platform uses deep eutectic solvents (DES) and ionometallurgy to extract metals at significantly lower temperatures than conventional smelting-based methods. Traditional metal recovery often relies on energy-intensive high-temperature processing, while DEScycle’s approach aims to reduce energy consumption and enable more flexible recycling operations.

The company’s commercial model is based on deploying modular processing units closer to waste-generation centres. This distributed approach could reduce transportation requirements, improve supply-chain efficiency and avoid dependence on large centralized smelting facilities.

Industrial Partnerships Strengthen Commercial Development Strategy

The Teesside project has attracted several industrial partners supporting different stages of DEScycle’s emerging business model. Cisco will provide retired electronic equipment for processing trials, giving DEScycle access to a recognised source of electronic waste while helping generate operational data on recovery performance, traceability and processing costs.

Meanwhile, Mitsubishi Corporation will conduct an offtake assessment examining potential markets for metals recovered at the facility.

Together, these relationships address three critical components of a recycling business:

  • reliable feedstock supply,
  • scalable processing technology,
  • downstream metal sales opportunities.

The partnerships do not yet represent guaranteed long-term waste supply agreements or binding purchase contracts for recovered metals.

Funding Supports Commercialisation Efforts

The Teesside demonstration facility follows DEScycle’s successful completion of a £10.2 million Series A funding round in 2024, which was partly intended to support construction and operation of the plant. The opening also comes amid growing UK government support for critical minerals initiatives, following the announcement of a £50 million critical-minerals funding programme in June.

The government initiative represents a wider policy effort and should not be interpreted as a direct funding award to DEScycle. The company is positioning its technology within the broader push to develop more secure domestic supply chains for strategic metals and reduce reliance on imported raw materials.

Next Step: Commercial E-Waste Recycling Facility in Gateshead

DEScycle’s planned next phase is the development of a commercial electronic waste recycling facility in Gateshead, designed to process approximately 5,000 tonnes of material annually. Compared with the future commercial plant, the Teesside demonstration facility represents only around 1% to 2% of the planned processing capacity.

This means the current operation is primarily focused on proving the technology rather than generating large-scale commercial output. The transition from demonstration scale to industrial production will require significant improvements in throughput, reliability and cost efficiency.

Operational Data Will Determine Commercial Viability

Performance results from the Teesside plant will be closely monitored as DEScycle evaluates whether its technology can support large-scale deployment.

Key metrics will include:

  • metal recovery rates,
  • solvent recycling performance,
  • energy consumption,
  • batch-to-batch consistency,
  • product purity,
  • processing costs.

These operational results will determine whether the company can attract additional project financing, equipment funding or strategic investment needed to build larger commercial facilities.

Scale-Up Remains the Main Challenge

Reaching industrial demonstration status gives DEScycle a stronger position than a conventional early-stage recycling technology company because it now has an operating facility, identifiable feedstock sources and potential downstream partners. Commercial scale-up remains a significant challenge.

Increasing annual throughput from 50–100 tonnes at Teesside to approximately 5,000 tonnes at Gateshead would require a 50- to 100-fold expansion in processing capacity. The success of DEScycle’s technology will therefore depend not only on recovering valuable metals, but also on demonstrating that the process can operate consistently, competitively and economically at commercial scale. If successful, the company’s modular recycling model could contribute to Europe’s efforts to strengthen supplies of critical metals while reducing dependence on traditional mining and energy-intensive processing routes.
