Cornish Metals has identified additional exploration potential at its South Crofty tin project in Cornwall, United Kingdom, after reporting encouraging assay results from the first drill hole of its Roskear surface-drilling programme.
The results, announced on 9 July 2026, indicate that tin mineralisation extends into areas outside the project’s current resource boundaries, supporting the possibility of future resource growth. While the findings strengthen the geological case for South Crofty, they do not yet alter the project’s official mineral resource estimate, mine development plan or financing requirements.
First Roskear Drill Hole Intersects High-Grade Tin Zones
Drill hole SDD26_001A was completed to a depth of 1,199.1 metres and intersected multiple zones containing significant tin mineralisation.
Reported assay results included:
- 0.79 metres grading 4.18% tin,
- 0.30 metres grading 2.20% tin,
- 12.41 metres grading 0.43% tin.
The intersections confirm the presence of tin-bearing structures at depth and provide additional geological information about the continuation of mineralised zones within the South Crofty area. The company said several mineralised structures were identified outside the current mineral resource envelopes, indicating that further exploration could potentially expand the known resource base.
Second Drill Hole Targets Mineralised Structures
Following the success of the initial hole, Cornish Metals has moved forward with a second drill hole targeting the same geological structures. The follow-up hole is positioned approximately 100 metres farther west, aiming to test whether the mineralisation continues along strike. Results from additional drilling will help determine the scale, continuity and economic significance of the newly identified zones.
Potential Resource Growth Could Improve Project Economics
The latest drilling results are important because additional resources could strengthen the long-term economics of South Crofty.
Increasing the available tin inventory could provide several benefits, including:
- extending the future mine life,
- improving utilisation of processing infrastructure,
- spreading development costs over a larger production base,
- increasing project value.
For underground mining projects, a longer operating period can significantly improve capital efficiency by allowing major investments in infrastructure, processing facilities and mine development to generate returns over a greater volume of production.
Tin Supply Security Gains Strategic Importance
South Crofty is located in a historic mining district with a long legacy of tin production and is considered one of the more advanced undeveloped tin projects in Europe.
Tin is a strategically important metal used primarily in solder production for electronics, but it is also increasingly recognised as a critical material for modern technology supply chains.
Growing demand from sectors such as semiconductors, renewable energy systems and electrification has increased interest in new tin supply sources outside traditional producing regions. Developing domestic European tin production could help reduce reliance on imported supplies and strengthen regional supply-chain resilience.
Exploration Success Must Still Translate into Classified Resources
Although the new results are encouraging, they do not yet represent an increase in South Crofty’s official mineral resource. Before the additional mineralisation can influence project economics, the company must complete further drilling, geological modelling and resource classification.
The key investor milestone will be converting these newly identified structures into formal mineral resources that can be incorporated into:
- updated mine plans,
- production schedules,
- feasibility studies,
- lender technical assessments.
Financing Remains the Next Major Challenge
The drilling programme improves the geological understanding of South Crofty but does not provide the capital required to begin construction. The project still requires significant development funding, and exploration success alone will not unlock the financing needed for mine redevelopment. Future progress will depend on a combination of resource growth, engineering studies, permitting progress and the ability to secure a suitable funding package.
South Crofty Advances Toward Long-Term Tin Production Potential
The Roskear drilling results provide further evidence that South Crofty may contain additional tin mineralisation beyond the areas currently included in the project model. If future drilling confirms the continuity and economic value of these zones, the expanded resource base could support a longer-life operation and improve the overall investment case. For Cornish Metals, the next stage will be demonstrating that exploration success can be converted into a larger classified resource capable of supporting mine planning and project financing decisions.
