Codelco’s El Teniente Earns Prestigious Copper and Molybdenum Sustainability Certifications, Strengthening ESG Leadership

Chile’s state-owned mining giant Codelco has achieved another major sustainability milestone after its El Teniente Division secured both The Copper Mark and The Molybdenum Mark certifications, reinforcing its commitment to responsible mining, ESG excellence, and global supply chain transparency. The achievement marks a significant step forward in Codelco’s broader sustainability strategy and highlights the growing importance of responsible production standards in the global copper and molybdenum industries. Following a comprehensive independent assessment, international auditors confirmed that El Teniente’s operations meet some of the industry’s most demanding environmental, social, and governance (ESG) requirements.

El Teniente Meets Higher ESG Standards

Unlike previous certification cycles, El Teniente was evaluated under the newly introduced Responsible Raw Materials Assurance (RRA) 3.0 Guidelines, a significantly more rigorous framework developed by The Copper Mark. The updated standard raises the bar considerably, expanding requirements from general sustainability reporting to a detailed assessment involving 33 performance criteria and 171 specific operational requirements. The new framework evaluates every stage of the mining value chain, requiring stronger technical controls, improved accountability, and enhanced sustainability performance.

By successfully meeting these demanding benchmarks, El Teniente has demonstrated that its operations align with internationally recognized standards for responsible mineral production.

Why The Copper Mark Matters

As global demand for responsibly sourced minerals continues to rise, certifications such as The Copper Mark have become increasingly important for mining companies seeking access to international markets. According to Codelco, the certification is more than a recognition of operational excellence—it is a strategic business necessity.

Major global commodity markets and buyers increasingly require proof of responsible sourcing before purchasing or financing mineral products. The certification helps ensure the traceability of copper production while providing customers, investors, and communities with greater confidence in mining practices. The growing emphasis on sustainable supply chains is particularly relevant as copper remains a cornerstone metal for renewable energy systems, electric vehicles, power grids, and advanced manufacturing technologies worldwide.

Independent Audit Confirms Strong Performance

The certification process involved a detailed independent review of El Teniente’s operations. Auditors conducted extensive on-site evaluations, including interviews with company executives, employees, and members of surrounding communities. Environmental management systems, social responsibility programs, governance practices, operational controls, and stakeholder engagement processes were all assessed as part of the review.

The audit found that El Teniente achieved compliance across the overwhelming majority of the evaluated criteria, highlighting the division’s strong sustainability performance.

Continuous Improvement Remains a Priority

While the operation successfully obtained certification, the evaluation also identified two specific areas where further improvements could strengthen performance. In response, El Teniente has developed a structured improvement roadmap that includes clearly defined actions, implementation timelines, and assigned responsibilities. Progress will be monitored through periodic audits and independent external verification.

This approach reflects a key principle of The Copper Mark framework, which encourages continuous improvement rather than treating certification as a one-time achievement.

The newly awarded certifications will remain valid until 2029, providing three years of formal recognition while requiring ongoing performance monitoring.

Strategic Importance for Copper and Molybdenum Markets

The certification arrives at a critical time for global mineral markets.

Demand for responsibly sourced copper is expected to accelerate as countries expand renewable energy infrastructure, electric vehicle production, and power transmission networks. At the same time, molybdenum, which is used to strengthen steel and specialty alloys, remains an essential material for infrastructure, energy, aerospace, and industrial applications.

As investors and consumers place greater emphasis on sustainability, mining operations that can demonstrate verified ESG performance are increasingly positioned to gain competitive advantages.

For Codelco, obtaining both The Copper Mark and The Molybdenum Mark helps strengthen market access, improve investor confidence, and support long-term commercial relationships with customers seeking certified responsible materials.

Corporate-Wide Sustainability Push Underway

El Teniente is not the only Codelco operation pursuing these standards. The company’s remaining divisions—including Chuquicamata, Radomiro Tomic, Ministro Hales, Gabriela Mistral, Salvador, Ventanas, and Andina—are progressing through their own evaluation and audit processes as part of a company-wide initiative scheduled throughout 2026.

The effort underscores Codelco’s ambition to establish consistent sustainability standards across its entire portfolio and strengthen its position as a leading supplier of responsibly produced metals.

Responsible Mining Becomes a Competitive Advantage

The successful certification of El Teniente demonstrates how sustainability is becoming a core component of mining competitiveness rather than simply a compliance requirement.

As governments, manufacturers, investors, and consumers increasingly focus on ethical sourcing and environmental responsibility, certified operations are expected to play a growing role in global mineral supply chains.

For Codelco, securing both The Copper Mark and The Molybdenum Mark reinforces its reputation as a leader in responsible mining while supporting the long-term sustainability of the global copper and molybdenum sectors.
