Central Asia Metals Gains Momentum with Higher Copper, Zinc and Lead Output as Cygnus Acquisition Strengthens Growth Outlook

Central Asia Metals (CAML) has entered the second half of 2026 with strong operational momentum, supported by rising production levels, significantly higher copper prices, and the strategic opportunity presented by its proposed acquisition of Cygnus Metals. The AIM-listed mining company reported improved output across all three of its core commodities while reaffirming full-year production guidance for both of its producing operations.

The update highlights a favorable combination of robust operational performance and strengthening market conditions, positioning CAML to generate substantial cash flow while simultaneously advancing its long-term growth strategy.

Copper, Zinc and Lead Production Continues to Improve

During the first five months of 2026, production increased at both of CAML’s operating assets: the Kounrad copper operation in Kazakhstan and the Sasa zinc-lead mine in North Macedonia. Copper production at Kounrad reached 5,141 tonnes by the end of May, compared with 4,953 tonnes during the same period in 2025. The improvement reflects continued operational efficiency at one of the company’s key cash-generating assets.

At the Sasa mine, performance was equally encouraging. Zinc-in-concentrate production rose to 7,566 tonnes, up from 7,397 tonnes a year earlier, while lead-in-concentrate output increased to 11,142 tonnes, compared with 10,792 tonnes in the first five months of 2025. The steady growth across all three metals reinforces CAML’s reputation as a reliable low-cost producer capable of delivering consistent operational results.

Surging Copper Prices Strengthen Earnings Potential

The production gains have been accompanied by a much stronger commodity pricing environment, particularly for copper. CAML reported an average realized copper price of $13,076 per tonne through the end of May, representing a dramatic increase from $9,377 per tonne during the same period last year. This substantial improvement significantly enhances profitability at the Kounrad operation and provides a stronger financial foundation for future growth initiatives.

The company also benefited from improved zinc prices, which averaged $3,299 per tonne, compared with $2,765 per tonne in the corresponding period of 2025. Meanwhile, lead prices remained relatively stable, averaging $1,934 per tonne compared with $1,952 per tonne a year earlier.

For investors, the pricing environment is particularly important because CAML’s investment appeal has traditionally been built on low-cost production, strong margins, and cash generation, rather than aggressive expansion alone. Higher copper prices significantly increase earnings potential while strengthening the company’s already healthy balance sheet.

Sasa Benefits from Favorable Market Conditions

In addition to stable lead prices, CAML noted that the Sasa operation continues to benefit from unusually favorable market dynamics. The company reported that lead concentrate treatment charges have turned negative, creating a rare advantage for the mine and improving its net revenue profile. At a time when many mining companies are facing margin pressure from inflation, geopolitical uncertainty, and volatile supply chains, this development provides an additional boost to profitability. The favorable treatment charge environment underscores the resilience of Sasa’s business model and enhances the contribution of the mine to overall group earnings.

Full-Year Guidance Remains Unchanged

Management remains confident in achieving its production targets for 2026.

The company reaffirmed guidance of 12,000 to 13,000 tonnes of copper production from Kounrad during the year. At Sasa, expected production remains between 18,000 and 20,000 tonnes of zinc-in-concentrate and 26,000 to 28,000 tonnes of lead-in-concentrate. Importantly, CAML highlighted that Kounrad traditionally delivers stronger production in the second half of the year. Warmer seasonal temperatures improve dump-leach performance, creating conditions that typically support higher output levels and stronger operational efficiency. This seasonal advantage could help accelerate production momentum during the remainder of 2026.

Strong Cash Generation Supports Growth Strategy

Chief Executive Officer Gavin Ferrar described the first half of the year as shaping up to be highly profitable and cash-generative, supported by stronger commodity prices and disciplined operational management. Despite ongoing geopolitical tensions affecting global trade and industrial markets, CAML reported no significant disruptions to its supply chain. Input costs and raw material availability have remained stable, allowing the company to maintain operational consistency.

This combination of rising revenues and controlled costs places CAML in a strong position to continue generating free cash flow while pursuing strategic growth opportunities.

Cygnus Metals Acquisition Adds a Major Copper-Gold Growth Option

The company’s operational strength also provides important context for its proposed acquisition of Cygnus Metals, announced earlier this month. If completed, the transaction would add the Chibougamau copper-gold project in Québec, Canada, to CAML’s portfolio, transforming the company from a producer focused primarily on two operating assets into a more diversified mining group with a significant development-stage growth project.

The acquisition aligns with broader industry trends that continue to favor high-quality copper assets, particularly those located in stable mining jurisdictions. As demand for copper increases due to electrification, renewable energy infrastructure, electric vehicles, and power grid expansion, development projects capable of supplying future markets are attracting growing investor attention. For CAML shareholders, the proposed deal represents an opportunity to gain exposure to long-term copper growth without sacrificing the company’s established dividend-focused investment profile.

Balance Sheet Strength Supports Expansion

One of CAML’s key advantages remains its financial position. The company entered 2026 with a cash balance of $80.1 million and minimal debt, consisting primarily of a modest $0.9 million overdraft facility. This strong balance sheet provides significant flexibility to fund exploration activities, evaluate acquisitions, and advance future development projects.

The company’s financial discipline has also allowed it to maintain a shareholder-friendly capital return strategy. CAML’s final dividend for 2025, totaling 7.5 pence per share, was approved during the May annual general meeting and is scheduled for payment on June 29, 2026. Management has confirmed that its dividend policy remains unchanged, targeting distributions equivalent to 30% to 50% of adjusted free cash flow.

Exploration Pipeline Continues to Expand

Beyond production and acquisitions, exploration is becoming an increasingly important part of CAML’s growth narrative. The company recently completed maiden drilling campaigns at two exploration projects in Kazakhstan, with both programs delivered on schedule and within budget.

In addition, CAML secured an option agreement covering a new exploration license in the Tengiz Basin, an area considered prospective for sediment-hosted copper mineralization. The property contains multiple mineralized targets across an area measuring approximately three kilometers by six kilometers. Elsewhere, in Scotland, CAML has funded an additional drilling phase at associate company Aberdeen Minerals, focusing on a newly identified target zone at the Arthrath project. Combined with the proposed Cygnus acquisition, these initiatives demonstrate the company’s commitment to building a broader pipeline of future development opportunities.

Balancing Dividends, Growth and Cash Flow

CAML’s latest update illustrates a company attempting to successfully balance three important objectives. The first is maximizing cash generation from existing operations while commodity prices remain favorable. The second is maintaining a clear and attractive dividend policy that continues to reward shareholders. The third is building a stronger copper-focused development pipeline capable of supporting long-term growth.

Investors will closely watch the upcoming first-half financial results to determine how effectively stronger metal prices translate into free cash flow. Longer term, attention will focus on whether the proposed Cygnus acquisition can deliver meaningful growth while preserving the low-cost operating model and shareholder returns that have historically defined CAML’s success.

With rising copper prices, expanding production, a strong balance sheet, and a growing development portfolio, Central Asia Metals appears increasingly well positioned to capitalize on favorable market conditions while preparing for the next stage of its corporate evolution.
