BHP’s Copper Earnings Reshape the Investment Case for the World’s Largest Miner

BHP is increasingly being valued less as a traditional diversified mining company and more as a global copper major backed by powerful cash flows from iron ore and other commodities.

For the year to June 2026, BHP produced approximately 2 million tonnes of copper, maintaining output at a similar level to the previous year. Copper generated around US$18 billion in EBITDA, up about 48% year on year and representing roughly 54% of the group’s nearly US$33 billion underlying EBITDA. The figures highlight how quickly copper has moved to the centre of BHP’s investment story.

Group revenue reached approximately US$58.8 billion, while underlying attributable profit was around US$13.2 billion. Net debt declined to approximately US$8.7 billion, giving the company substantial financial flexibility to invest in new projects while maintaining a strong balance sheet.

Copper Becomes BHP’s Growth Engine

Copper prices around US$14,000 per tonne are significantly improving the economics of BHP’s existing operations and strengthening the case for major development projects. At Escondida in Chile, BHP has approved around US$500 million in pre-commitment spending for a potential new concentrator. A final investment decision could come in 2027–28.

Escondida already ranks among the world’s largest copper mines, making expansion and production-support investments particularly attractive because they can utilise existing infrastructure rather than requiring a completely new mining system. BHP’s growth opportunities extend well beyond Chile.

Vicuña Offers Long-Term Copper Growth

In Argentina, BHP and Lundin Mining jointly control the Vicuña district, one of the most significant emerging copper-gold development regions globally. Early concepts suggest a fully developed Vicuña complex could eventually produce close to 500,000 tonnes of copper and 800,000 ounces of gold annually. Recent environmental and investment approvals for the initial stage have improved the project’s development prospects, although the eventual capital requirements are expected to be substantial.

For BHP, Vicuña offers something increasingly valuable in the global copper industry: a large undeveloped resource capable of supporting production growth over several decades. The company also retains exposure to Resolution Copper in Arizona, another large-scale long-term opportunity. Regulatory challenges remain, but the project’s geological scale gives it considerable strategic value.

Potash Adds Portfolio Diversification

BHP is also preparing for another major portfolio development through Jansen potash in Canada, with first production expected in 2027.

Jansen could create a significant new earnings stream in a commodity supported by global agricultural demand and relatively concentrated supply. This diversification strengthens BHP’s overall investment case. Iron ore provides cash generation, copper offers growth and exposure to structural supply shortages, while potash adds another long-term earnings platform.

Strong Balance Sheet Supports Copper Expansion

One of BHP’s biggest advantages is its ability to finance large projects internally. New copper mines can require US$2 billion to US$8 billion or more in upfront investment, while permitting, infrastructure development and construction can take many years. BHP’s balance sheet gives it considerably more capacity to absorb these costs than smaller developers. The company can pursue copper growth without taking on the same financing risks faced by junior mining companies.

That advantage, however, shifts the key investment question toward capital allocation. Investors must consider whether BHP will maintain disciplined spending, avoid overpaying for acquisitions and prevent projects from becoming dependent on permanently high copper prices.

BHP’s New Mining Investment Profile

Copper has already become BHP’s largest EBITDA contributor, while Escondida, Vicuña and Resolution provide a substantial pipeline of future opportunities.

The company’s investment case is therefore evolving rapidly. BHP is no longer simply an iron-ore producer with additional copper exposure. It is increasingly becoming a major global copper producer financed by some of the mining industry’s strongest legacy cash flows, with iron ore and potash providing diversification and financial resilience. That combination could make BHP one of the clearest beneficiaries of the growing global focus on copper scarcity, electrification and critical-mineral security.
