Anfield Energy Advances Shootaring Canyon Mill Restart, Targeting 2027 Return to U.S. Uranium Production

Anfield Energy is taking another significant step toward restoring domestic uranium processing capacity in the United States, launching preparatory work at its Shootaring Canyon uranium mill in Utah ahead of a planned production restart in 2027. The company recently announced the beginning of dismantling activities at the long-idled facility, marking a key milestone in its broader strategy to establish a fully integrated uranium production platform. The initial work involves removing existing leach tanks, a move designed to reduce reclamation liabilities while preparing the site for major infrastructure upgrades.

The development comes as interest in domestic uranium production continues to grow amid increasing demand for nuclear energy, energy security concerns, and efforts to strengthen U.S. critical mineral supply chains.

Regulatory Progress Supports Restart Timeline

The latest construction activities build upon regulatory work completed earlier in 2026. As part of ongoing permitting requirements, Anfield drilled eight additional groundwater monitoring wells to address information requests from the Utah Department of Environmental Quality (UDEQ). The data collection effort represents an important component of the licensing process required to bring the facility back into operation.

The company is now focused on obtaining the final renewal of its radioactive materials license, a key regulatory milestone that management expects to secure before the end of the year. Achieving this approval would clear a major hurdle on the path toward restarting one of the few licensed uranium milling facilities in the United States.

Engineering Upgrades Aim to Boost Processing Capacity

Alongside permitting activities, Anfield has moved forward with detailed engineering work to modernize the mill. Engineering firm PSE Engineering has been contracted to design upgrades that will expand the processing circuit and support a throughput capacity of approximately 1,000 tons of ore per day.

The modernization program is expected to transform the facility into a strategically important processing hub capable of handling uranium feed from multiple mining operations throughout the region. Once completed, the upgraded infrastructure could significantly enhance Anfield’s ability to participate in the growing U.S. nuclear fuel supply chain.

A Historic Uranium Mill Poised for a Second Life

The Shootaring Canyon mill has a unique history within the American uranium sector. Originally constructed in 1980, the facility entered production only briefly before market conditions forced its closure. The mill operated for approximately six months in 1982, producing 27,825 pounds of uranium concentrate before collapsing uranium prices made continued operations uneconomic.

For more than four decades, the site remained dormant as the uranium industry endured prolonged periods of weak pricing and limited investment.

Anfield acquired the asset from Uranium One in 2015 and subsequently identified it as a cornerstone of its long-term development strategy. Today, with uranium markets significantly stronger and governments increasingly focused on energy security, the company sees an opportunity to bring the facility back into operation under far more favorable market conditions.

Central Processing Hub for Regional Uranium Projects

The Shootaring Canyon mill is expected to serve as the central processing facility for Anfield’s growing portfolio of uranium assets. Rather than developing standalone processing infrastructure at individual mining sites, the company intends to transport ore from multiple satellite operations to the mill for processing.

This centralized approach offers significant economic advantages by reducing capital expenditures, improving operational efficiency, and leveraging existing infrastructure. As additional projects advance toward production, the mill could become an increasingly valuable asset within Anfield’s broader uranium development strategy.

Velvet-Wood Project Advances Alongside Mill Development

While work progresses at Shootaring Canyon, Anfield continues advancing its flagship Velvet-Wood uranium-vanadium project in Utah. Earlier this month, the company announced the successful completion of phase-one surface construction activities at the fully owned project.

Velvet-Wood recently achieved a notable milestone by becoming the first U.S. uranium project to receive a government fast-track designation, highlighting its strategic importance to domestic critical mineral and energy initiatives.

The project has now entered a second development phase expected to continue for approximately six months. Once operational, Velvet-Wood is anticipated to become a key source of feed material for the Shootaring Canyon mill, supporting the facility’s expanded processing capacity and contributing to future uranium production growth.

Growing Demand for Domestic Uranium Production

The timing of Anfield’s development efforts aligns with a broader resurgence in the global uranium industry. Rising electricity demand, increased investment in nuclear power, and growing concerns over supply chain security have strengthened support for domestic uranium production across North America.

The United States remains heavily dependent on imported uranium despite possessing substantial domestic resources. As policymakers seek to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers, projects capable of adding new mining and processing capacity have attracted increasing attention.

The reactivation of Shootaring Canyon could therefore play a meaningful role in rebuilding the country’s nuclear fuel infrastructure.

Strategic Importance for U.S. Energy Security

The addition of new uranium milling capacity is particularly significant because processing facilities represent a critical bottleneck within the nuclear fuel cycle. Even when uranium deposits are available for development, the lack of licensed milling infrastructure can limit production growth.

By restoring Shootaring Canyon to operation, Anfield would add valuable domestic processing capacity at a time when demand for uranium and nuclear fuel services continues to strengthen. The project also supports broader efforts to improve U.S. energy independence and establish a more secure supply chain for critical raw materials.

Company Positions Itself for the Next Phase of Uranium Growth

According to Anfield management, the combination of regulatory progress, engineering advancements, and ongoing project development places the company on track to achieve its 2027 production objective.

With a positive completeness review already received from Utah regulators and site preparation activities underway, the company believes Shootaring Canyon is well positioned to become one of the next uranium processing facilities to return to operation in the United States.

If development continues according to plan, the mill could become a vital component of America’s uranium sector revival, supporting both domestic energy security and the growing global demand for nuclear power.
