Almonty’s Sangdong Tungsten Mine Enters a New Era as Production Moves From Promise to Reality

Almonty Industries has reached a defining stage in the development of its Sangdong tungsten mine in South Korea, moving the project beyond years of planning and construction into actual processing operations. During June 2026, the company began feeding stockpiled run-of-mine ore into its newly commissioned processing facility, marking the first practical step toward producing saleable tungsten concentrate.

The milestone represents a major transformation for Sangdong. Once viewed primarily as a long-term critical minerals development project, the mine is now entering the early stages of becoming an operating asset with potential near-term revenue generation.

Stockpiled Ore Provides Foundation for Initial Production

Almonty has built a significant inventory of material to support the early processing phase. The company reported approximately 139,700 tonnes of stockpiled ore with a blended grade of around 0.25% WO₃ (tungsten trioxide) following additional development work during the second quarter of 2026.

This inventory includes:

  • Around 120,000 tonnes of ore held at the end of the first quarter
  • Additional development ore added during the second quarter

During the initial ramp-up period, Almonty is processing lower-grade material rather than immediately targeting the highest-grade sections of the deposit. This approach reflects standard mining practice during commissioning. The priority at this stage is not simply achieving maximum grade, but ensuring:

  • Stable plant operation
  • Reliable recovery performance
  • Consistent concentrate quality
  • Effective ore blending procedures

A successful ramp-up depends on proving that the processing circuit can operate consistently before moving toward higher production levels.

Sangdong Arrives as Tungsten Becomes a Strategic Metal

The timing of Sangdong’s move into production is particularly significant.

Tungsten has become one of the world’s most strategically sensitive industrial metals because of its critical role in:

  • Defence systems
  • Aerospace components
  • Electronics manufacturing
  • Industrial cutting tools
  • High-temperature applications

Although tungsten represents a relatively small commodity market compared with metals such as copper or lithium, its unique properties make it extremely difficult to replace in many industrial uses. As governments and manufacturers reassess supply-chain risks, new tungsten production outside China has gained increasing importance. Sangdong’s transition into processing therefore represents more than a routine mining milestone. It is part of a broader effort to develop alternative sources of critical minerals in regions aligned with Western supply-chain strategies.

A Test of Whether Critical Mineral Projects Can Deliver Real Supply

For many years, critical minerals discussions have focused on identifying strategic resources and encouraging new projects. The industry is now entering a more demanding phase: proving that these projects can actually produce material at commercial scale.

Sangdong provides an important example of this transition.

The mine’s success will depend on whether it can move from:

  • Resource development
  • Construction completion
  • Plant commissioning

toward:

  • Consistent concentrate production
  • Commercial shipments
  • Long-term customer supply

In today’s market, ownership of a mineral deposit is no longer enough. Companies must demonstrate that they can deliver reliable material into industrial supply chains.

Investors Focus on Three Key Milestones

For shareholders and potential investors, the next stages of Sangdong’s development are clearly defined.

Operational Performance

The first challenge is proving that the processing plant can maintain:

  • Target throughput rates
  • Stable recoveries
  • Predictable production quality

Commissioning success does not automatically guarantee smooth long-term operations.

Commercial Delivery

The second milestone is customer acceptance.

Tungsten concentrate must meet required specifications before it can become a reliable commercial product. Consistent quality and shipment performance will be critical in establishing long-term market credibility.

Strategic Positioning

The third question is whether Sangdong can become a foundation for a broader non-China tungsten supply chain.

If successful, the project could support downstream processing opportunities and strengthen supply security for industries that rely on tungsten-based materials.

Sangdong’s Valuation Story Has Changed

The start of processing operations changes how the market evaluates Almonty’s project.

Previously, investors were valuing Sangdong mainly as a future mining opportunity based on:

  • Resource size
  • Development potential
  • Commodity outlook

Now, the focus is shifting toward:

  • Production execution
  • Operating costs
  • Recovery rates
  • Revenue generation
  • Customer relationships

Early production does not eliminate development risk, but it represents a major reduction in uncertainty. The company is no longer focused only on building a future tungsten mine. It is beginning the process of becoming a tungsten producer.

A Critical Step for Global Tungsten Supply Diversification

Almonty’s move into processing marks an important moment not only for the company but also for the broader critical minerals sector. At a time when governments and industries are seeking more secure sources of strategic materials, projects capable of delivering physical supply are gaining importance.

Sangdong’s next challenge is execution: converting initial processing success into stable, long-term production. If Almonty achieves that goal, the South Korean tungsten project could become a significant supplier outside China and an example of how critical mineral developments can move from policy ambition to real industrial output.
